Are there ANY good variations on John?

Guess what, DP and I have a bunch of relatives called John. DP's mn is John and he has never liked it - it's so boring. For sentimental reasons I'd love to include some variant in our child's name if we have a boy, but God it's a struggle to come up with any that we like besides Ivo, which I think is maybe not an obvious link to English ears.

My cousin has already named her child one of the (v nice) Welsh forms of John, so maybe she's paid the family dues.

I am in a similar situation and want to use Jonty

badg3r · 21/06/2018 22:03

I like Yann Jonas and Iain

autumnkate · 22/06/2018 22:55

I think John is really understated and cool.

harrietm87 · 23/06/2018 17:11

John is such a great name, you should just go with that!

Hippopotas · 08/07/2018 18:31

Johan
Johannes

Belindabauer · 08/07/2018 21:44

I like John so I'd go to it that.

I’d also just use the original or break tradition and just not use it. I’m actually in a similar situation. DF and FIL are both John. Dh’s Middle name is John. Hence, Ds’s middle name is john. Tbh I take the view that the point of middle names is exactly this. I didn’t feel I had to love it. Dd’s middle name is my Granny’s name. Loved my Gran. Can’t say I adore the name but I like that I was able to remember her through dd’s middle name.

Ian
Though I would use John ... very unusual to see on a child these days :)

SmellyNelly2018 · 08/07/2018 23:02

Ian is Scottish for John

@JaneJeffer Given the placement of the comment in the thread, I'm guessing that @lynmilne65 hasn't heard of these books, the earlier ones of which I, and no doubt the previous poster, remember fondly:

I know an American lady called Johnetta- so John can also be included if you have a girl 😂

bionicnemonic · 08/07/2018 23:37

Johann

Marcipex · 09/07/2018 00:46

Jon
Jonny
Jonathan
Jonathon are all lovely.

notsolittlegrebe · 09/07/2018 06:45

Owen

Personally I like Jon, but really dislike John and Jonathan - no idea why Confused

Toofle · 09/07/2018 07:43

I know twins who both have John as their middle name - one after each grandfather.

SmellyNelly2018 · 09/07/2018 10:34

Jane is feminine form of John if you have a girl.

Lycanthropology · 09/07/2018 11:28

I'd use Evan or Owen.
I think Ian may be out of favour for a while after Huntley, Brady and Watkins!

Also failed to see an unpleasant username Confused

loubielou31 · 09/07/2018 11:38

Ioan and Iolo (iolo)it looks like Lolo in this type face. They are versions of john.
I suppose you could have Jonathan but nn Nathan or Nate?

Baubletrouble43 · 09/07/2018 11:53

Jan
Johan
Jowan?

Ontopofthesunset · 09/07/2018 12:02

Well, there's Ian and Ivan and Owen and Jan and Johann and Johannes and Hans and Gianni and Giovanni and Jon and Johnny and Jean and Eoin and Ianto and Ion and Jack and Jens and Iwan and Joan and Jonas and Juan as well as the Seans and the Yannises and the various diminutives of all the John variants.

Or you could just call him John. A middle name is pretty useless to the person anyway and is only used on things like passport applications so if you want to honour someone why not just honour them? One of one of my sons' middle names is John after his grandfather. He never uses it but quite likes the fact that his two middle names are the names of both his grandfathers.

MikeUniformMike · 09/07/2018 14:18

Jurgen is George not John.
