Scilly inspired names

Dp and I both have roots in the Scilly Isles, and it's a place that is very special to us.

We would like to choose a Scilly-inspired name for dc1.

Our shortlist is:

Girls
Bryher (my favourite, but I'm worried people will think it is a yooniq spelling of Briar)
Agnes (to be nicknamed Ness/Nessa)
Mary (but think it's a bit boring?)

Middle name likely to be Matilda

Boys
Samson
Hugo/Hugh (after Hugh Town)

Middle name likely to be Arthur

Any thought? Please tell me if you think any of them sound ridiculous.

Icklepup · 20/06/2018 21:48

I like Agnes Matilda and Hugo Arthur.

PhilODox · 20/06/2018 21:48

My first thought was Bryher-ny! Grin

MikeUniformMike · 20/06/2018 21:53

Syllan. Cornish for Scilly. You could have Gugh, Ennor, Tristan, Helen, Tresco, Martin.
I think Bryher is nice and sounds pretty but will get confused with Briar.
Mary Matilda is a bit twee.

RedDwarves · 20/06/2018 22:27

I thought Bryher was a misspelling of Briar.

Mary Matilda and Hugo Arthur.

TatianaLarina · 20/06/2018 22:29

I agree about Bryher, but I really like the name Briar.

AnyaMoondial · 20/06/2018 22:31

I love Mary. Very classy and poised. Mary Matilda sounds fabulous.

TatianaLarina · 20/06/2018 22:31

How about Briar Agnes Matilda?

capercaillie · 20/06/2018 22:32

Samson is an awesome name. I’ve met a couple under 10 years old.

Like Agnes Matilda for a girl

TatianaLarina · 20/06/2018 22:32

I’d rather be called Matilda than Mary, so I’d do it the other way.

Captainchaos8 · 20/06/2018 22:34

Agnes Matilda is very cute! My daughter gets called Nessa but her real name is Esther.

Captainchaos8 · 20/06/2018 22:35

Samson Arthur sounds very cool 😀

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/06/2018 22:37

Agnes or Mary are lovely. Hugh is a fabulous boys name.

I'm not a fan of Samson.

Sophronia · 20/06/2018 22:43

I know a 14 year old Bryher, and also a Tean. I like Agnes, Mary and Hugh as well.

Bagadverts · 20/06/2018 22:48

I like all the names. I haven't come across Bryher, not necessarily a bad thing, though it may lead to your DD having to spell/correctly pronounce the name more times than Mary.

Do you know of Annie Winifred Ellerman? Bryher was her pen name, it was the Wikipedia entry that came up when I googled the name. It does look a lovely place on Scilly.

If you are in the U.K. Tresco as suggested by PP is very close to Tesco's and I can imagine a lot of teasing.

scatteredglitter · 20/06/2018 23:45

Am loving your suggestion of Mary - there s not a lot of Mary s now a days so it would not be common and it could be really cute for a little girl yet quite strong for a woman.

There s lots of Sam s ... and Hugo s .... I think I prefer Sam

TatianaLarina · 21/06/2018 08:55

Mary is slang for vagina.

Peachbubble · 21/06/2018 09:16

I like Samson or Agnes

bridgetreilly · 21/06/2018 11:28

Agnes Matilda or Agnes Bryher.
Hugh Arthur.

deptfordgirl · 21/06/2018 13:45

I really like Agnes Matilda and Hugh Arthur.

BlueChampagne · 21/06/2018 14:01

I know of 2 Teans ...
Helen?
Or have Matilda Bryher?

Jago for a boy?
Wolf??

Rosevean or Rosevear if you're feeling adventurous? I keep thinking Armorel but predictive text is always going to render it Amoral ...

MariaMadita · 21/06/2018 14:04

I really like Mary. Mary Matilda is a fab name combo imo.

Hugo and Samson are both nice.

MariaMadita · 21/06/2018 14:07

Martin (after St. Martin's) is also nice imo.

Annet (or Annette) could be nice as well.

SilverHairedCat · 21/06/2018 14:12

Are you in Cornwall still? The Cornish will know Bryher as a good Cornish name! It's lovely. As is Samson. Stick to those, IMO.

Susannach · 21/06/2018 15:20
