Due with a baby boy in a few weeks and can’t quite decide on a name so thought I’d ask for help narrowing down my list.

A little backstory-
Split from Welsh husband two weeks before discovering I was pregnant. I’m Canadian-American and had already returned to North America, so baby will be raised there. Giving baby a Welsh middle name (think it’s natrowed down to Rhys) to reflect his Welsh heritage and my last name of Hunter.

Now my conundrum is this - names that people love in the UK (think Harry, Arthur, Stanley, George) do not fare well over here. It’s pretty much unheard of to give your baby a name like that. And then vice versa, I don’t want to saddle him with an overly Americanized name that his father and grandparents cringe at when they hear (though at this point I don’t think they’re planning to be involved, but that’s a whole different saga) so I’m trying to steer clear of the names that get dragged on here like Mason, Jackson, etc for being too American and “common”.

Thus my current list is:

Xavier
James/Jamie
Samuel
Adam
Alexander

Any of those I should exclude for being decidedly un-British? If not, which do you prefer the most? I’m beginning to think this baby will remain completely nameless!

Thanks x

From your list Alexander is my favourite. If I ever went on to have a boy it would be on my list!

grasspigeons · 14/06/2018 16:40

They are all lovely names but I don't know how to pronounce Xavier is is Eks Avier of Havier or Zavier

Don't be worried about an Amercian name on an American child either - if those arnt compromise names for you. I know loads of Mason's and a couple of Jacksons.

I love Samuel, Adam and Alexander. Can't choose between them! I'm not keen on Xavier, and I knew so many boys called James growing up that it seems a little bit dull to me, but it is a perfectly nice name.

Peachbubble · 14/06/2018 16:42

I like James and Adam from your list

Rtmhwales · 14/06/2018 16:44

@user Yes, I did notice James is very common/popular there! My STXH’s two best mates are James and Jamie. But over here I’ve only ever actually met one and I do like it and figured it’s less startlingly American to my future ex in-laws so I’m considering it.

That being said, if he had been a she, she was going to be called Aspen which is such a ridiculously Americanized name and out there on the British scale (but the only female name I like) so I’m not sure why I’m tryjng to tread so carefully here!

Adam is my favourite followed by James.

Rtmhwales · 14/06/2018 16:46

@grasspigeons

Over here it’s pronounced Ex-zayv-yer. It’s been one of my favorite names all my life but seems to either be loved or loathed by everybody with no in between!

Love Alexander,it one of my son's middle name and his other middle name is Rhys so I love your name choices

IggyAce · 14/06/2018 16:47

I love Alexander it has plenty of great nn. It's my DS middle who on fact has a very American first name.

PizzaAndChips · 14/06/2018 16:49

I don't think Xavier is too common over here in the UK. If you opted for Alexander you could nn him Xander, which, I believe, is more "American" than "British" and isn't too dissimilar to Xavier.

diddl · 14/06/2018 17:16

Xavier is fab!

TatianaLarina · 14/06/2018 18:14

Over here it’s pronounced Ex-zayv-yer

Incorrectly in other words. I would steer clear of it for that reason.

Alexander, James or Adam are fine. Alexander would be my favourite.

When people complain about names being too American here - it’s because it’s slightly pretentious. It’s different if you are actually American! I don’t have a problem with an American name for an American boy.

ErrantBakedBean · 14/06/2018 18:14

Alexander could give you Xander as a nn, which sounds more American to me so could be a good compromise? And Xander isn’t a million miles from Xavier...

ErrantBakedBean · 14/06/2018 18:15

Oh sorry Pizza - just saw your post. Great minds!

HJL2506 · 14/06/2018 18:21

I think Alexander (or Alex) goes lovely with The middle name and surname!

notsolittlegrebe · 14/06/2018 18:29

I really like Alexander and Samuel.

I would steer clear of Xavier due to pronounciation issues (I'm pretty sure most Brits would see your chosen pronounciation as "wrong").

Adam and James are fine just not to my personal taste.

PizzaAndChips · 14/06/2018 18:29

Haha, @ErrantBakedBean , the similarity between our posts is almost eery!! Grin Great minds, indeed!

Asmallrole · 14/06/2018 18:33

Alexander is a fab name and sits well in both countries. I also love Xander.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2018 18:34

Xavier isn't in the least bit British so if you want British, avoid that one.

The rest of your list are really nice, good choices.

With Rhys as a middle name I'd be inclined to go for Alexander.

Peachy92 · 14/06/2018 19:09

Samuel Rhys 😍

Jammycustard · 14/06/2018 19:10

Alexander

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/06/2018 22:44

Adam Rhys Hunter.

Picknickers · 14/06/2018 23:43

Adam would be my pick. It's strong, lovely and not overused.

blinkineckmum · 14/06/2018 23:49

They're all nice but Adam Rhys Hunter really is fab.

Sophronia · 15/06/2018 00:00

I like Adam Rhys
