It makes me think of Ruin.

Blazinghotmonkey · 12/06/2018 16:56

Is it pronounced Roo-an?

SoddingUnicorns · 12/06/2018 16:58

It’s Cornish, I have a friend with a Ruan. Apparently the origins are fairly vague but they had a mediaeval Cornish saint called Ruan.

I had a school friend called Ruan. I like it - but then he was a really nice boy so my judgment is coloured. There is at least one village in Cornwall called Ruan (Ruan Lanihorne) so, to my mind, it's no different to Veryan.

Realised my comment may have looked like I didn’t like it...which I do! I think (if I’m pronouncing it right) it’s lovely and a perfectly reasonable Christian name. I love the nickname Roo mind :)

I know a Ryan, his mum has a Gaelic name, so assumed it was Gaelic too. I like it.

Stoopid auto carrot. You know I ment Ruan, right?

Peterfdsouza · 12/06/2018 18:40

You are right. It is pronounced as Roo - an. It sounds really lovely. Hence I love the name.

Ruán generally means red-headed.

SacharissaCrisplock · 12/06/2018 18:49

Reminds me of the Cornish village - Ruan Minor on the Lizard Peninsula

avocadosrus · 12/06/2018 18:58

It would just make me think that you misspelt Roan sorry, I love "quirky" names but not this one! Roan I do like however!

mikado1 · 12/06/2018 19:02

Think it's Roo-awn, Rúán in Irish. Really nice. not as nice if pronounced Roo-an.

Gloopy · 12/06/2018 19:09

I think it's a lovely name. I really like it and the spelling.

mikado1 · 12/06/2018 19:20

Another similar sounding one is Cuan (harbour)- Coo-n (softer than -an)

Belmo · 13/06/2018 09:47

The Scottish gaelic is Ruadhan. I quite like it!
