What do you think of the name Alison? I've been really loving it lately, as it isn't too frilly. Also liking the nn Ali. My only worry is whether it is too dated. Thoughts?

Any middle name suggestions would also be appreciated - struggling to come up with anything that flows nicely.

no. Naomi or Celeste I love.......

Alison is ok, but not the name of names I'd chose...

RenaissanceBunny · 10/06/2018 03:42

Well I like it lots and lots Grin maybe because it’s one of my names. I disagree with it being dated and it think it ages really well. Alison is lovely on a little girl. Ali nice on a teen and Alison nice on a grown woman of any age. Also that spelling is spelt as it sounds so it is really easy when giving your name. And easy for people to pronounce. Being an A you’re at the top of alphabetical lists so more likely
to be picked for things. It is short and easy to learn to write - my mother had a long name like Jacqueline and hated having to learn to write it so gave us all short simple names that are easy to spell to go with a surname that we have to spell out every single time.

Go for it!

Hundredacrewoods · 10/06/2018 03:44

Honestly it's too dated for my taste.. I associate it with names like Sharon and Tracey. Go for it if you love it though.

user546425732 · 10/06/2018 03:45

It's good.

BarbaraWarpecker · 10/06/2018 03:51

It's my generation (I'm 50) so to me is a bit dated rather than vintage... However, a very positive connotation is the song Alison sung by Elvis Costello. It's beautiful.
Other variants... Alice, Elise, Alicia, Eleeza????- all lovely girls in my DC's primary school

HappyGirl86 · 10/06/2018 03:56

My mum is called Alison, most people call her Ali or Al. I gave my daughter Alice as a middle name as I preferred it, and it seemed more popular now. Although ironically my grandad wanted to call my mum Alice and my nana chose Alison as she thought Alice was old fashioned! Funny how things change.
Either way Alison is a lovely name!

Bubblesoup · 10/06/2018 04:40

I think it's quite dated but i bet it'll be popular again in the next decade! I don't love it but it's nice enough.

AnyaMoondial · 10/06/2018 06:32

I like it a lot. Like you say it's not super frilly like a lot of names now and it's not old lady either. It's great actually Smile

Flamingosnbears · 10/06/2018 07:37

A lovely name with a retro feel that you don't here anymore

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/06/2018 07:43

It's a nice name but obviously very dated.
It belongs with Karen, Debbie, Julie and Diane.

parrotonmyshoulder · 10/06/2018 07:47

I like it. My DD (8) has a name from the same generation. It’s fine if other adults think it’s ‘dated’. The other children don’t!

Our only difficulty, and it’s not a problem at all, is that people will sometimes call me by her name as it sounds like an adult’s name, I guess.

MinaPaws · 10/06/2018 07:47

Definitely due to come back into fashion. The Alisons I know are all very cool, successful, creative people - novelist, musician and artist, so I associate the name with very arty people. And the song is lovely.

Fresta · 10/06/2018 07:49

I prefer Alice.

AWaspOnAWindowInAHeatwave · 10/06/2018 07:50

Absolutely love it. One of my best friends is an Alison and she's a beautiful person inside and out. And she's much younger than all the other Alisons I can think of.

Bigfathairyones · 10/06/2018 07:51

I know no Alison’s under the age of 40!

silverpenguin · 10/06/2018 07:51

I like it a lot. Although it was popular for babies born in the 50s, to me it hasn't dated as much as other names from that era.

TatianaLarina · 10/06/2018 08:16

Dated and dowdy and dull.

MrsJoker · 10/06/2018 08:25

My daughter is Alison so I am obviously biased, but I love it. It’s classic, understated in a good way, easy to say, easy to spell. Ally is a great way to shorten. And there’s not a million other Alisons of her age either (mid 20s) so she stood out a bit more in a school full of Hannah B, Hannah M and Amy/Aimee/Amie

IggyAce · 10/06/2018 08:26

I like it. Middle name suggestions:
Alison Rose
Alison Charlotte
Alison Grace
Alison Kate
Alison Winter
Alison Wren
Alison Jayne
Alison Claire

Movablefeast · 10/06/2018 08:59

Although not a big fan as it is of my generation, I can understand the appeal, especially since Karen and Penelope (both very popular for babies born 1965-1975) have both made a comeback.

HeyDolly · 10/06/2018 09:14

I’m not sure. Its very common amongst women in their 40-50s. Maybe it’s due a revival but it’s a bit bland for my taste.

RedDwarves · 10/06/2018 09:44

Really dislike it.

Love Alice though.

Yogagirl123 · 10/06/2018 09:48

I love it OP

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/06/2018 09:51
