Thoughts? To go with DS Rory.
I have posted before about Ciara. We are still considering Ciara but I'm really liking this. Potential nickname could be Aily.
Living in UK, half Irish baby.
Thanks!

I like it, easy to pronounce and could have some nice nicknames.

ShowOfHands · 09/06/2018 18:07

Dd's best friend is an Ailish (she's Scottish) and utterly beautiful. I love the name.

DailyFailAreTwats · 09/06/2018 18:08

I know an Ailish too. Lovely name! Stylish and elegant - go for it!

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/06/2018 18:09

It just makes me think.of Eyelash, sorry.
What about Eilidh?

villainousbroodmare · 09/06/2018 18:11

V nice. I think I prefer Ciara though.

GummyGoddess · 09/06/2018 18:17

I thought it was spelt Eilish?

Daphnedolittle · 09/06/2018 18:20

Mostly positive then, that's good.

IHave i love the name Eilidh but I know the pronunciation would be difficult over here. I feel like Ailish as an acceptable spelling whilst being fairly phonetic and I can still use Aily as a nickname.

I love it

I’ve only known one (Irish family but not living in Ireland) but it’s a lovely name. While you might need to explain how to spell or pronounce it at first, once you know it’s not hard.

Glumglowworm · 09/06/2018 19:27

I love Eilidh as well

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/06/2018 20:28

My Dd is Niamh, people get used to it.

Moonkissedlegs · 09/06/2018 20:32

Isn't the correct spelling of that name Ailis? I'm not really a stickler for correct spellings but if you are considering Ciara (which is the correct spelling, and lovely by the way) then maybe you are!

soundsystem · 09/06/2018 20:50

Love love love it, and I think it goes better than Ciara with Rory. We also considered Eilidh for DD (Scottish, living in South East England) but when we tested it putshemostly would have been called Eyelid

Bubblesoup · 09/06/2018 20:55

Lovely!

DramaAlpaca · 09/06/2018 21:46

Moonkissed the 'correct' spelling is indeed Ailis. My Irish friend ended up changing it to Ailish, though, as people where she lives in the UK were getting it wrong all the time.

Gummy Eilis/Eilish is a different name altogether. They would be the Irish equivalent of Elizabeth, whereas Ailis would be anglicised as Alice.

TatianaLarina · 09/06/2018 23:21

I’d go Ailis or Eilish/Eilidh

GummyGoddess · 10/06/2018 05:18

@DramaAlpaca good to know, I only know one Eilish and no Ailish's so no experience of many pronunciations.

Daphnedolittle · 10/06/2018 08:26

I think although the correct spelling is Ailis, Ailish appears to be more commonly used, even in Ireland, so that's good enough for me Grin and will be easier for people to pronounce.
We went for Rory rather than Ruairi for the same reason and Rory is more commonly used than Ruairi in Ireland too according to the name stats.

MayFayner · 10/06/2018 08:29

Ailish appears to be more commonly used, even in Ireland,

Well this isn’t actually true but if Ailish is the name you love then go for it.

Daphnedolittle · 10/06/2018 08:31

Thanks for all your opinions by the way. I am really loving this one.
Do you prefer it to Ciara? My concern with Ciara is the whole Key-ah-ra pronounciation or See-air-a, that might drive me loopy!

OP posts:
Daphnedolittle · 10/06/2018 08:34

may I'm basing it on the baby name stats. Born in 2017 it said there were 3 girls called Ailis and 11 called Ailish in Ireland.

I prefer Ciara. I can't help but think of "ailing" with Ailish - not great connotation. Prefer Eilis for that reason.

Timeisslipingaway · 10/06/2018 08:37

I have a cousin called ailish but hers is spelled, Ellis, I think 🤔

harrietm87 · 10/06/2018 08:41

(By Eilis I meant the Eye-leesh pronunciation, fada on the i)

@Timeisslipingaway its probably Eilis with a fada on the E, which is Ay-lish.

Timeisslipingaway · 10/06/2018 08:43

Ah your right that's it. I new what I wrote didn't look right 🤣

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/06/2018 08:44

Makes me think of Ailing too. Also, to me it's a very fuddy-duddy old lady name.
