What do you think of the name Philippa? My DH really likes it and at first I wasn’t keen but it’s growing on me. Interested to hear opinions. Thanks

Phillipa could sound a little bit formal, pippa is sweet :)

I know a little Philippa. I think it has slightly upper-class/well-off connotations but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I also think it's one of those names that sounds a thousand times prettier than it looks. Pippa I like, but beware if you have any French connections as it is slang for oral sex I believe.

I had a lovely friend called Philippa at high school. We called her Pip for short.

Pippa is a nice nick name with Phillipa a beautiful elegant name to use when that is required.

Philippa is really nice. As PP said, Pippa can mean rude things in some languages. Pip is nice. I know a Philippa that is shortened to Piper as well.

I absolutely love this name, it was my stand out favourite. However, the diminuative Pip (which I also like) makes a really silly word when added to my surname, so it was ruled out for us. I also like the male version Philip, which we had to rule out for the same reason.

So use it, because it's a lovely name :)

I think Anne had a college/housemate called Philippa, shortened to Phil, in the later Anne of Green Gables books? IIRC she was really quite cool, and Phil really suited her. As shortenings go, I think I prefer it to Pippa.

I like it and also think Pip and Pippa are nice nicknames. It’s quite a classic, Royal name with good nickname potential so that’s good in my book.Smile

Not a fan, and it gets misspelt a lot.

Pippa is fine, but I vastly prefer Piper as a standalone name. It seems contrived as a shortening for Philippa too.

It was one of our choices for our baby girl. We went with Anne in the end, but I do love Phillipa.

It's a good name, brings to mind a studious little girl, it will carry well through childhood into adulthood.

I like it — the ones my age are Pip/Pippa, but my mum has a friend who goes by Phillie which really works for her.
