What do you think of the name Philippa? My DH really likes it and at first I wasn’t keen but it’s growing on me. Interested to hear opinions. Thanks

Phillipa could sound a little bit formal, pippa is sweet :)

villainousbroodmare · 08/06/2018 20:03

Like it.

I know a little Philippa. I think it has slightly upper-class/well-off connotations but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I also think it's one of those names that sounds a thousand times prettier than it looks. Pippa I like, but beware if you have any French connections as it is slang for oral sex I believe.

CAAKE · 08/06/2018 20:11

I had a lovely friend called Philippa at high school. We called her Pip for short.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 08/06/2018 20:12

Gorgeous.
Pippa is a nice nick name with Phillipa a beautiful elegant name to use when that is required.

daisypond · 08/06/2018 20:15

Philippa is really nice. As PP said, Pippa can mean rude things in some languages. Pip is nice. I know a Philippa that is shortened to Piper as well.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/06/2018 20:16

I like it, and I love Pip and Pippa. I might worry about Phil though.

AnyaMoondial · 08/06/2018 20:20

Really like it.

mrsm43s · 08/06/2018 20:21

I absolutely love this name, it was my stand out favourite. However, the diminuative Pip (which I also like) makes a really silly word when added to my surname, so it was ruled out for us. I also like the male version Philip, which we had to rule out for the same reason.

So use it, because it's a lovely name :)

Jj2431 · 08/06/2018 23:18

I like it and pippa is a lovely nn

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 08/06/2018 23:20

Lovely.
I think Anne had a college/housemate called Philippa, shortened to Phil, in the later Anne of Green Gables books? IIRC she was really quite cool, and Phil really suited her. As shortenings go, I think I prefer it to Pippa.

Octopeppa · 09/06/2018 01:28

I like Philippa but not Pip/Pippa.

TatianaLarina · 09/06/2018 08:33

It’s a very square, geeky, dowdy name.

Greenteandchives · 09/06/2018 08:37

I love it. It was my first choice if I had had a dd. Only had dss.

LucyJ61 · 09/06/2018 08:51

Thanks everyone.
@daisypond I’d never thought of Piper an alternative nickname, I like it

I like it and also think Pip and Pippa are nice nicknames. It’s quite a classic, Royal name with good nickname potential so that’s good in my book.Smile

RedDwarves · 09/06/2018 10:21

Not a fan, and it gets misspelt a lot.

Pippa is fine, but I vastly prefer Piper as a standalone name. It seems contrived as a shortening for Philippa too.

hiptobeasquare · 09/06/2018 10:25

It was one of our choices for our baby girl. We went with Anne in the end, but I do love Phillipa.

sexnotgender · 09/06/2018 10:26

Love it, not as keen on Pippa as a nickname though.

Flamingosnbears · 09/06/2018 10:28

It's a good name, brings to mind a studious little girl, it will carry well through childhood into adulthood.

LoveInTokyo · 09/06/2018 10:45

I think it’s a bit dull and Pippa doesn’t travel well as some other PP have said.

MatildaLovesBooks · 09/06/2018 12:13

Hate Philippa. Very old fashioned and an ugly name.

Love Pippa. Piper is okay.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/06/2018 13:46

I like it — the ones my age are Pip/Pippa, but my mum has a friend who goes by Phillie which really works for her.

17caterpillars1mouse · 09/06/2018 15:27

I really like Phillipa nn Pip

Osopolar · 10/06/2018 15:30

Love it. It is a timeless classic IMO.
