I think this name is gorgeous.
If I have a girl I think I want to use it.
What do other think? Is it too common? I don’t know any but I can see it’s in the top 20.

Also is it too delicate for a grown woman?
I don’t think so, but opinions very welcome.

I pretty sure it was listed as the most popular girls name in the world (due to how many countries it is used in)

chickywoo · 06/06/2018 18:07

It’s beautiful for baby, girl and grown up, could also be: Safia or Safiyah

bixquert · 06/06/2018 18:08

It is a beautiful name though x

thethoughtfox · 06/06/2018 18:10

Super popular as is Sophie but for good reason.

Lemonsherberts · 06/06/2018 18:13

Thanks bixquert. I’m not too worried about it being popular all over the world collectively, but if it was literally number one in the uk, I wouldn’t use it.
I have a name that is of my time, and popular when I was born but virtually unused now, there were four in my year at school, think along the lines of Rebecca/Emma popularity for baby girls in the late 80s.

But now I’m older and working with people of different ages, I don’t know anyone else with my name. So I don’t necessarily see a problem with a popular name. I still would want to avoid number one in the uk however!

It is a beautiful name! I personally would be put off if she's going to be one of many at school. Are there any other names you like?

Hazel
Clarissa
Lyra

It's a lovely name. I know it's supposed to be popular but I don't know any where we live. It suits an older woman and a little girl too. Use it!

Octopeppa · 07/06/2018 11:45

Sophia is a fantastic name, simple and classic. I don't think it sounds delicate, I think it's quite a strong and elegant name, neither harsh nor insipid. The meaning wisdom Is lovely too.

Spidermansthong · 07/06/2018 12:26

It's very popular in the part of the South East that I live in. There are lots of Sophia, Isla and Olivia here.

implantsandaDyson · 07/06/2018 12:32

I have an almost teenage one Grin. It was always going to be her name and tbh I love it just as much now as I did then. She likes it too (always a plus!). It's grown with her like all names do I think. She occasionally gets Fia, mainly from family.

In 2015 Sophia was #12 in England and Wales. However, if you combined all of the Sophias, Sofias, and hyphenations, it went up to #4:

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/combined-spellings-2015-girls.html

The 2016 combined spellings aren't available, but given that Sophia went up a place to #11 in 2016, and Sofia went up two places to #29, it is clearly becoming more popular, not less. It's absolutely beautiful, but if popularity is a problem then these are important figures to know.

Thanks so much everyone.
I don’t think popularity would be a too much of a problem for me.
I sometimes find I don’t really like very unique names as often they aren’t popular for good reason!
But it’s each to their own and everyone’s tastes are different.
I am of the opinion it is an elegant classic and I don’t think i could go too far wrong with it. Just need some boys names now....!

It's a lovely name. I'd always go for Sophia and not Sofia unless you've got Spanish/Italian etc links.

TatianaLarina · 07/06/2018 17:49

If you pronounce it So fire in the old English way there are many fewer of those around.

MinaPaws · 07/06/2018 17:51

I don't care how common it is, I think it's the most beautiful girl's name ever. It was my first choice if we'd had girls 15 years ago and I still love it. Great meaning too - wisdom.
