IRA or Drunken Ira Hayes, the whiskey-drinkin' Indian from the Johnny Cash song.

villainousbroodmare · 04/06/2018 19:57
Great song but so sad.
Jj2431 · 04/06/2018 19:58

The spelling is a no. What about Eira

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 20:02

Eira is a girl's name.
How about Eli?

SisterMoonshine · 04/06/2018 20:05

I really like it.
I think of Ira Gershwin and Ira Glass.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 04/06/2018 20:07

I know two Ira's and they're both female and English if that matters. The I.R.A connotations puts me off.

LadyPeacock · 04/06/2018 20:08

Could you find an alternative spelling?

Irah
Ihra
Yra
Eyra
Ayra

dinosaurkisses · 04/06/2018 20:16

Reminds me out the scene in When Harry Met Sally when Harry is singing Surrey With a Fringe On Top without noticing his ex and her new BF have walked in.

Also- IRA. But I'm Irish so it would never be a goer here.

NigellaWannabe1 · 04/06/2018 20:17

It means wrath in several Mediterranean languages. That, plus IRA, makes me associate the name to violence...

InkSnail · 04/06/2018 20:18

I think of Ira Gershwin. It didn't remind me of the IRA, because I would only pronounce it as IRA if it was in capitals.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/06/2018 20:38

Hiram/Hyram.

lolalotta · 04/06/2018 20:49

I thought it was a girls name

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 20:55

How about Ivo?
I think it is pronounced Ee-vo but can be pronounced I-vo.
Ivan?

Gottokondo · 04/06/2018 21:17

I'm dutch and still my first thought was the IRA. So You might want to think of something else (unless you agree with what their views and methods were but I guess/hope that is unlikely).

TheTroutofNoCraic · 04/06/2018 21:23

Definitely would drum up IRA connotations in the UK, a bit like calling a child Isis...both legitimate names with unfortunate associations with these acronyms .

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 04/06/2018 21:24

I find it really interesting that pp read Ira as a girl's name. It's completely a boy's name to me! Love Ira Glass AND Ira Gerswhin. Good history, that name.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 04/06/2018 21:25

Excuse the weird upper case//typos!

Moonkissedlegs · 04/06/2018 21:31

Defo like Asa, although the only Asa I know where its their actual name and not a nickname is a girl? But it's a boys name too isn't it?

What about Asher?

PurplePimplePin · 04/06/2018 21:33

Ezra
Luca
Asa
Asha

DuchyDuke · 04/06/2018 21:35

Islamic versions:
Aira
Eira

Indian version
Iraa

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 04/06/2018 21:59

Asa is definitely a boy's name!

reddressblueshoes · 04/06/2018 22:00

I also think Ira glass, and would never make the IRA connection, and I'm Irish but uncapitalised it wouldn't occur to me. Though my DH has ruled out Saoirse for similar reasons so I understand the concern.

I love Ezra, and Amos, and I also know an Irial (pronounced Ear-ial) which seem similar in style?

maybejane · 05/06/2018 01:10

Ira seems like an elderly woman's name to me.. very dated and feminine (imo at least). Like pp's suggestions of Ezra, Luca and Asher as alternatives. Ivan would also be lovely. :)

MakeItStopNeville · 05/06/2018 01:12

No! The only Ira I know tried to murder his wife, with his mistress!

applesandpears56 · 05/06/2018 01:14

Ivor!
