What would you think if someone called their child Ziggy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
starsuniteonceagain · 03/06/2018 10:44

They were on something.

DownUdderer · 03/06/2018 10:48

There is a Ziggy in my daughters class! There’s also Spike in yr 6. My daughter didn’t bat an eyelid!

Ohcomeonn · 03/06/2018 10:50

That the parents thought they were 'alternative' but really they dress their kids in joules and shop at waitrose

BitOutOfPractice · 03/06/2018 10:51

That the parents fancy themselves as a bit alternative.

That they've read Big Little Lies

Jj2431 · 03/06/2018 11:36

That they had lost the plot sorry

maybejane · 03/06/2018 11:49

That it was either short for Sigmund or Isaac, or they'd gone loopy.

mzsink · 03/06/2018 11:57

My son is zig or ziggy short of another traditional name.

sonnyboo · 03/06/2018 12:43

I know one too! Kids seem much more accepting of different names than some adults on Mumsnet, it seems.

Ickyockycocky · 03/06/2018 12:45

I’d think of The Wire.

daisypond · 03/06/2018 13:05

If it was short for something like Ezekiel, etc, I rather like it.

LoveInTokyo · 03/06/2018 13:39

I would think the parents were complete cretins and try to avoid them. I wouldn’t judge the child though.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 03/06/2018 14:22

I'd think 'poor kid'. People should remember they're naming a person, not a baby. Names like that might sound cute and quirky on a preschooler but what about when poor Ziggy is in his 30's and trying to be taken seriously at work?

wowfudge · 03/06/2018 14:38

I know two adults called Ziggy. Shortened versions of two different non-English names.

Labtest7 · 03/06/2018 15:28

I like it.

Marioki · 03/06/2018 15:33

That their parents watched Grange Hill in the 80s/90s.

TroubledLichen · 03/06/2018 15:35

I was at school with a Ziggy in the 1990s. It was a nickname; he was really called something ordinary like Steve, I don’t actually remember though as he was known exclusively as Ziggy. If I heard it now I’d guess the parents were Bowie fans.

ErrantBakedBean · 03/06/2018 16:20

I'd assume the parents were Bowie fans and wanted people to know it.

n0ne · 03/06/2018 16:40

I like it as a nickname, especially for Siegfried or Sigrid. But as a stand-alone name? Not so much.

Alexia05 · 04/06/2018 10:30

An acquaintance of mine has a son named Ziggy. I couldn't help thinking of Ziggy Marly and Ziggy Stardust in the beginning. ;-) But I got used to it. And yes, they're quite alternative/artistic people. I don't dislike it but I would use it as a nickname.

Flamingosnbears · 04/06/2018 11:00

That they wanted somthing different, wouldn't care really its their choice.

Cosmoa · 04/06/2018 14:21

I like it! Makes me think of Ziggy Marley Grin

Jammycustard · 04/06/2018 14:29

Middle class ‘arty’ types. Not keen myself.

TempleOfBlooms · 04/06/2018 14:47

I know a three year old Ziggy. I quite like it even though I chose traditional names for my kids. Ziggy lives in east London so I doubt his name will ever be an issue for him.

bixquert · 04/06/2018 16:05

Ohcomeonn that made me lolGrin

rainbowstardrops · 04/06/2018 16:13

I don't mind it as a nickname but I'm not so keen on it as a first name.
