Cait

What are your thoughts on Cait as a stand alone name? I love it and my husband likes it but would prefer a longer version. I don't like Catherine and grew up in the states where every other girl seemed to be called variants of Caitlin so I'd rather not use that. Anty other ideas of a longer version?

Thanks!

My dd is Caitlin/Cait. It's not uncommon in the uk but we don't meet many.
Catalina, Catriona, Catherine, Caroline or Carolina could all be shortened.

NannyR · 23/05/2018 08:53

I like it but I would assume it was a shortening of caitlin. I think Kate works better as a stand alone name.

I prefer Kate or Cate. If I sure Cait I would assume full.name was Caitlin as Fair just looks incomplete whereas if I saw Kate or Cate I wouldn't assume it was short for something as I see it as a complete name on its own
Funny how different spellings of the same name lead to different assumptions

sonnyboo · 23/05/2018 08:59

Cait is short for Caitlin. I'd probably use the full name, but I would certainly know how to pronounce it (Cait)!

catalinablue · 23/05/2018 08:59

I think it definitely works as a stand alone name! Though, the 'Cait' spelling is awful imo, it looks so unfinished. Kate is much nicer - a lovely name.

I do love Katarina/Katerina as a longer version, it's very pretty and strong. Catalina is another option, which I am perhaps partial to considering it's my own name. Grin

Rainydaydog · 23/05/2018 09:02

Do you want people to pronounce it as Quoit, Cat or Kate
Grin "Its Caitlin, pronounced Quoit"

Flywheel · 23/05/2018 09:07

Caitlin is an Irish name pronounced Kawtchleen. Cait is pronounced Kawtch. Along those lines anyway. Not a problem in UK but if I met someone in Ireland I would say Kawtch

Rainydaydog · 23/05/2018 09:09

My friend is called Kathleen, she hated it growing up as she says people pronounced it Kathleeeeeeeen.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/05/2018 09:09

I would pronounce it kawtch too.

RedLemonade · 23/05/2018 09:12

Agree that in Ireland she’d be Kawtch/Cotch. I like Kate. Very pretty name, spelling simple.

ScaredPAD · 23/05/2018 09:14

I think Kate is much nicer!

Snipples · 23/05/2018 09:21

Yeah I'd assume it was pronounced coyte - as it is in Ireland. But I really like Cait (Kate) as a stand-alone name. I'd spell it Cate to avoid confusion.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/05/2018 09:28

Kate.

RB68 · 23/05/2018 09:28

Mine is a Caitlin Cait (Pronounced the English not Irish way but Irish Granny does call her Koschleen occasionally. I wanted the shortened version but have a friends daughter Kate, a Cousin Cayti, an Aunty Catherine so worked around that - I worried about the spelling but in speaking its no different in the UK so rather than confuse DD she is Caitlin with short Cait I call her both

SandysMam · 23/05/2018 09:29

Makes me think of Caitlin Jenner’s reality show “I am Cait”.

SandysMam · 23/05/2018 09:30

I love Kate though.

summermeadows · 23/05/2018 10:46

I think Cait is lovely OP, it's a name I would have chosen if I'd had a little girl.

I know a little Cait, she's about 8/9 now and I've never heard anyone here (in Northern Ireland) being confused as to how to pronounce it.

If it's the name you love then go for it!

sycamore54321 · 23/05/2018 10:55

I really like it if you mean the actual irish name, with the fada on the A. If you mean it as an unusual spelling of Kate, then I'd say no.

Someone above said Cait is short for Caitlin; it's actually the other way round, Caitlin is the diminutive of Cait. But can also be a standalone name.

abiirthdaycake · 23/05/2018 12:05

I'm in Northern Ireland and would also say Kawtch/kawtsh/koit/all of those merged together (I don't really know how to write it phonetically). Sycamore is correct in saying that Caitlín is "short for" Cait rather than the other way round.

If I met a British person with the name Cait who had a British accent I would probably assume it's pronounced like Kate, though

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2018 13:06

That's the problem with Cait, it has so many different possible pronunciations.

To me it's pronounced something like Koyt, but it depends on what part of Ireland you are in.

I suppose I would expect someone with an English accent, for example, to pronounce it the same as Kate though.

I'd go for Cate instead, tbh, though I like Kate better myself.

sycamore54321 · 23/05/2018 15:06

Just realised I didn't really answer your question. Caitriona would be another Irish option for a longer version.
