The queen in Brave is called that, so it's supposed to be Scottish. I don't think it is though?

French, I think. From Alienore, and other variant spellings of Eleanor. But it was common through England and Scotland well before the time of Braveheart.

ScreamingValenta · 17/05/2018 17:20

A lovely name, with either spelling.

noideawithboysnames · 17/05/2018 17:43

Originated in France but it’s the welsh way to spell Eleanor too.

BB2018 · 17/05/2018 18:29

Also the spelling of the Sense and Sensibility heroine. Love a bit of Jane Austen! And love the name, it’s on my list!

TatianaLarina · 17/05/2018 18:48

Oh God not another one.

Helena is more stylish.

HoratioNightboy · 17/05/2018 20:16

No, OP, it's not even a Scottish variant spelling. There are almost 200 different spellings of Eleanor/Eleanora in the Scottish records, and this wasn't a particularly prevalent one. All the spellings were pronounced EEL-inor though, rather than ELL-inor.

noideawithboysnames · 17/05/2018 20:19

What does that mean Tatiana?

PearPeachCrumble · 17/05/2018 21:36

Eleanor. Elinor just looks like a typo and/or you can't spell.

noideawithboysnames · 17/05/2018 21:37

But Elinor is a legitimate and recognised spelling.

weekfour · 17/05/2018 21:38

I love it.

Not so much more than Ellie.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 17/05/2018 21:39

Pretty and elegant... it was on our shortlist for DD - we are in Wales mind.

fairiedemon · 17/05/2018 21:43

Another one here saying spell it ‘properly’... but I have a strong personal bias Grin To be honest though people are just going to spell it how they think it should be spelt wether it’s a legitimate spelling or not (personal experience) so if you love it go for it!

LoveInTokyo · 17/05/2018 22:23

Elinor is a proper spelling.

Jane Austen used it in Sense and Sensibility over 200 years ago.

immortalmarble · 17/05/2018 22:24

Yes, sense and sensibility was my first thought too - it’s a lovely name. I prefer Eleanor personally but Elinor is nice too.

ScreamingValenta · 17/05/2018 22:25

I'm a Chalet School Fan - it's definitely a proper spelling Grin.

dinosaurkisses · 18/05/2018 17:12

I'm an Austen fan so prefer it to Eleanor.

It's lovely and plenty of nickname options

Pemba · 18/05/2018 17:24

Nothing wrong with Elinor, classic name etc. Although I do prefer the Eleanor spelling really. Jane Austen also had an Eleanor (in Northanger Abbey).

dillytilly · 19/05/2018 13:26

Really gorgeous classic name ! X

buttercup54321 · 20/05/2018 19:12

Prefer Eleanor or Elena.
