Myrna?

What do you think? DD1 also has a name beginning with M which is my main reservation. We are having trouble agreeing - dh is Irish and wants an Irish name, I can't find any I like and that don't have unfamiliar spelling in uk. I like vintagey names like Mavis, Doris, Ethel etc but dh hates them. Myrna has come up and we are both interested, but I knew a family with 4 kids names starting with H which I thought a bit much!!

How do you pronounce that? Confused I can’t quite work it out

Aprilmightbemynewname · 13/05/2018 21:23

Looks too much like Myra which doesn't throw up a pic of a gorgeous baby for many people.

tenbob · 13/05/2018 21:23

It makes me think of the coil...

EllenJanethickerknickers · 13/05/2018 21:26

As in Myrna Loy? Unusual but pretty enough.

Joinourclub · 13/05/2018 21:29

I thought it said Myma at first. Then when I saw Myrna I really struggled to say it in my head. How is it pronounced?

higgyyellow · 13/05/2018 21:31

Looks like a typo of Myra. Very hard to work out how to say it. Generally awful.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 13/05/2018 21:32

Murr nah.

Justwaitingforaline · 13/05/2018 21:32

Google tells me it’s pronounced Mer-nah

Not a fan OP, sorry!

WaitrosePigeon · 13/05/2018 21:32

How on earth do you pronounce that?

Just because of that fact I wouldn’t use it.

strawberryblondebint · 13/05/2018 21:33

What about Maeve or Maebh. Or Morven or Mirren (both scottish though)

weebarra · 13/05/2018 21:33

How about Morna?

MessyBun247 · 13/05/2018 21:37

What about Mairead? Also love Maeve.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 13/05/2018 21:40

Looks like a typo of Myra and god knows in the UK you don’t want that mental association.

Mairead seconded. And Maeve.

Leftfield suggestion: Margot?

Aprilmightbemynewname · 13/05/2018 21:48

I knew a Maura. ..

Smellyjo · 13/05/2018 21:56

Yes Murr-na. We are Scottish/ Irish so I think it'll sound nicer in our pronunciation than in some English accents where r's aren't really pronounced. I like mirren but so common here and friends have the name. And Maeve but too close to DD who is Maisy.

My first thought was Myrna Loy. I quite like it, I didn't realise it was an Irish name.

RavenWings · 13/05/2018 22:16

Didn't think the pronunciation was that difficult looking.

I think it's ok. Not amazing but nothing wrong with it

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 13/05/2018 22:20

I know a Myrna and she is one of the loveliest women I have ever met. She is early 50s though and I honestly just don’t see it as a name on anyone much younger! I’m not opposed to old lady names, but Myrna just don’t work for me.

If you want an Irish name that is pretty much fool-proof how about something like Aine?

Personally I’d just go with an Irish name and let the non-gaeilge speakers get on with it.

There are, for sure, some names which are likely to be too awkward or which will sound totally wrong in different accents, but there are plenty which will work.

Roisin is another favourite of mine.

(Disclaimer - I regret not going with Irish names - I’m Irish but DH is English and we live in Scotland)

ClinkyMonkey · 13/05/2018 22:24

I knew a Myrna at primary school and she was lovely - so for that totally irrelevant reason, I love it!

Guacamoledip · 13/05/2018 22:25

Isn’t a murna a name for a vagina?

Smellyjo · 13/05/2018 22:29

I just can't find any Irish names that I actually like! They are all ok, but I want to love the name. I also want to give him his heritage given we live in Scotland but so many just feature weird sounds I don't like. I mean he likes Cliona (pronounced Cleena Confused)

I think I'm really liking it. All the feedback is helpful, nothing making me think oh no that's terrible. Such as I was thinking Eileen for a while but then my cousin said it made her think of 'I lean on a wall' and I couldn't shake that Grin

Smellyjo · 13/05/2018 22:30

Oh but then I just read the vagina one. Sorry what??

Guacamoledip · 13/05/2018 22:41

Honestly I’m not trying to be horrible. I’ve always called it a fairy, there are tons of words aren’t there but I’m sure someone I went to school with called it a murna or something along those lines. Maybe just one of those one family slang things I dunno.

cocodomingo · 13/05/2018 22:53

Its pretty...i think there is a myrna bird unless i made that up

TatianaLarina · 13/05/2018 22:54

And Eileen Dover

I mean he likes Cliona (pronounced Cleena)

What about Kalina which is similar but not so domestic choresy.
