Alternative spelling for Laurie — bad idea?

We would love to use the name Laurie as a standalone name. (His big sister is Tess, also on her birth certificate and I'm not hung up on having a long name and a nickname.)
However, the poor kid will have four nationalities and will be born in a fifth country. Three of those places, including the one we are most likely to live in, would pronounce Laurie Lau- (rhyming with 'now') ree-uh. Which is just too far from what we would be calling him at home. Is there any more phonetic spelling that would still be recognised in the UK or do we just have to forget about Laurie?

Nice name. What about Lauri or Lori?

LooseyInTheSky · 13/05/2018 20:08

I know a Lori. Works well on him, he's 47.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/05/2018 20:09

Lorry?
But be prepared for him to be given the nickname Truck at school

Love Laurie but I can’t think of an attractive alternative spelling that really works. I’d go with Laurie and just be prepared to explain it — it’s an easy enough sound I’d have thought, even if spelling may not be intuitive elsewhere.

Lawrie? I had a friend whose name was spelt Lawrence and that how he abbreviated it.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/05/2018 20:13

Lawrie is a usual shortening of Lawrence but may not solve your problem!

There's a Tobias in our family. One nationality pronounces it Tob-eye-us and the other pronounces it Tob-EE-us. He responds to both Smile

You could switch to Louis (pronounced Loo-ee) if that’s not going to cause issues and not too royal for you

daisypond · 13/05/2018 20:25

Could you do Lawry? That gets rid of the I-E ending that is likely to give you the ree-uh ending you don't want.

MrsJayy · 13/05/2018 20:29

Laurie is a scottish name is that 1 of your nationalities Grin I like it but the lauries I know are men but stillif you like it do it.

AlyTab · 13/05/2018 20:35

Lori I think is the nicest alternative spelling :)

NorthEndGal · 13/05/2018 20:38

Lori is the easiest solution , Id think

Hall456 · 13/05/2018 20:39

I know of a Lawrey, if that helps

MaryWortleyMontagu · 13/05/2018 20:41

Louis won't help if one of your nationalities is German - they pronounce it "lou-is" not as "louie".

TheAntiBoop · 13/05/2018 20:44

We have three nationalities and one of them pronounce the kids names horribly. But once the kids were old enough they very quickly corrected them!

It depends on whether the name can be said by all the nationalities rather than how it would be pronounced, and what country he will predominantly live in

All the Laurie's I know are older generation and from north east england

Smellyjo · 13/05/2018 21:16

I work with a female Lori, she's late twenties.

vampirethriller · 14/05/2018 05:42

I knew a girl called Lawrie, said Lorry, in school.
