What are your thoughts on the name Jonah for a boy?

I'm always on the fence with Jonah - I like the sound and look of the name, but I don't think I could use it because of the association with unluckiness. Which is silly, but...

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/05/2018 08:57

I prefer Jonas.

RoundaboutSnail · 10/05/2018 08:58

I quite like it.

bubblegumbubbles · 10/05/2018 10:00

I like it

Needs to make a comeback the way Noah did

chezmk1988 · 10/05/2018 10:01

It's on my list. Love it

Sophronia · 10/05/2018 10:03

I prefer Jonas.

I like it. The biblical Jonah wasn't that unlucky, was he? He disobeyed God, asked to be thrown overboard and was lucky to be rescued by the big fish. Or do you mean the Jonah from early 80's Grange Hill, who if I recall was a friend of the scouse boy and was drownned while messing about in the pool Wink

A long-established expression among sailors uses the term, "a Jonah", to mean a sailor or a passenger whose presence on board brings bad luck and endangers the ship. Later, this meaning was extended to mean, "a person who carries a jinx, one who will bring bad luck to any enterprise.

Unfortunately that puts me off the name.

bridgetreilly · 10/05/2018 10:35

I think it's lovely.

Shutityoutart · 10/05/2018 10:38

samG76 · 10/05/2018 10:40

Thanks, Sonnyboo -I'd no idea.... I still like the name, though.

wildgirls · 10/05/2018 10:50

I have a Jonah!! I loved the film sleepless in Seattle and there was a cute Jonah in that so loved it ever since! I didn't know about the negative superstition side until after we'd named him and to be honest I spent ages regretting it as SO many people commented on it and seemed surprised by the name. Really upset me :-(
However, I love it now and it really suits him! Have met a couple of others but hope it doesn't get too popular! (don't think it will)

blairsey · 10/05/2018 11:27

I love the name

Cosmoa · 10/05/2018 17:03

I love the name Jonah Smile it's a shame people get hung up on the negative connotations of names...

It's weird.. Nobody says anything about the name Eve, yet she was known for bringing sin into the world.. And periods/painful childbirth 😂 (not that I believe any of that but you get my point?)

daisypond · 10/05/2018 20:37

But Jonah is in the dictionary as a word meaning "person believed to bring bad luck; a jinx" and Eve isn't in as a word. And the biblical Jonah didn't throw himself overboard and was then saved by a whale. It's the opposite. He was chucked overboard to drown by the sailors, as he brought them bad luck, they thought, and then got eaten by a whale.

mondler · 10/05/2018 20:46

I love it.

Nanasueathome · 10/05/2018 20:48

I have a 6 year old grandson called Jonah
Knew no one else with the name beforehand
Absolutely love the name (and my grandson)

sonnyboo · 10/05/2018 22:57

It's weird.. Nobody says anything about the name Eve,

Eve is just a name.

Jonah is also a word defined in the Collins Dictionary as "a person believed to bring bad luck to those around him; jinx"

Cosmoa · 10/05/2018 23:21

Jonah is also a name though. I mentioned that it's a shame people get hung up about connotations to a name.

samG76 · 11/05/2018 09:50

Daisy - Jonah did ask to be chucked overboard. From the text you will see the sailors (who are considered in the Jewish tradition to have been holy people) were very reluctant to do so, and it was only a last resort.

And if he hadn't been swallowed by the big fish he would have drowned.
