I'm expecting a dd and love the name Iona. But I already have a 7year old Isla. Is this too similar or can it work? I'm so fussy with names and Iona is really the only girls name I like!

I would say that's too similar, tbh.

MikeUniformMike · 07/05/2018 13:45

It's ok. I would consider how it sounds with your surname as it sounds like 'I own a'. Also think about possible nn, as three syllables is quite long. Would Rona or Una be names you'd like?

RavenWings · 07/05/2018 13:50

Too similar imo.

Justfred · 07/05/2018 13:54

Fiona
Una
Nuala
Lena

I think they'd be too similar for me to use persinally, but it's not ridiculous so I don't think it's a big deal to have Isla and Iona.

GruffaloPants · 07/05/2018 13:54

I think it's fine. The have some letters in common, but don't sound that similar.

missyB1 · 07/05/2018 13:56

Too similar. I know a mum who has called her girls very similar names and everyone gets them mixed up.

BikeRunSki · 07/05/2018 13:58

I know sisters called Isla and Iona! It’s fine. Their brother is called Arran, and the dog is called Skye.

blairsey · 07/05/2018 14:31

Personally think they're too similar, sorry. What about Fiona, Flora or Cara?

Chembe · 07/05/2018 14:37

Thank you so much for your opinions! I do quite like flora as well. I'd like to keep to Scottish names and I liked having the girls named after islands but it limits me an awful lot!

MikeUniformMike · 07/05/2018 14:55

Flora is lovely. Much nicer than Iona.

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/05/2018 15:01

I think it's fine and I also know sisters with those names.

If you want to stick with islands then you also have Shona and Vaila or Skye but that's pretty popular. You could also use Eilean which is Island when translated.

blairsey · 07/05/2018 15:09

Skye is so pretty, much nicer than Iona imo.

IVflytrap · 07/05/2018 15:10

Too similar in my opinion. I think people would get your daughters' names confused all the time if you had an Isla and Iona. Some more islandy names:

Skye
Jura
Vaila
Lorna
Kilda
Shona
Eriska
Sanday

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/05/2018 15:10

Yes they are too similar. Surely they can't be the only 2 names you like.
There's thousands of gorgeous names out there

Isla and
Lois. Belle. Ruby. Cora. Cara. Sofia. Tess.
Cleo. Erin. Grace. Lucy. Thea. Freya.

catinapoolofsunshine · 07/05/2018 15:13

I think they're too similar. I avoided the same first initial personally, otherwise (unless you have 8 kids and only numbers 2 and 7 coincidentally share an initial) they sound like a matchy matchy pair, and people forget which is which.

Emma198 · 07/05/2018 15:13

I don't think they're too similar. One has three syllables the other has two. Although they've both got 4 letters and start and end with the same one so they look very similar, they sound different to me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/05/2018 15:22

Nora. Morag. Greer. Fiona.

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/05/2018 15:24

Lorna is my favourite name at the moment.

Others sisters of Iona that I know:

Kirsten
Coirstaid
Mairi
Nairne
Erin

Needmorehands · 07/05/2018 15:37

I know a family which has an Isla and an Iona.
Lovely names :)

TatianaLarina · 07/05/2018 16:13

It’s fine, not to similar.

TatianaLarina · 07/05/2018 16:14

too

Iona and Isla sound fine to me

manicinsomniac · 07/05/2018 21:59

They're quite similar but if you really love Iona, I'd use it. They're not ridiculously similar (hardly Eva and Ava type territory) and they won't be bracketed together after the first 18 years of their lives.

I once met a little girl called Eriskay which her mum said was after a Scottish island. I think that's really pretty and also like Kilda and Skye.

As a child, I also used to know a pair of sisters called Ailsa and Iona - I thought Ailsa was the prettiest name in the world.

Or how about Isobel or Ishbel if you like 'I' names but want a more different sound to Isla?
