EspressoPatronum · 30/04/2018 10:38

user1481804394 · 30/04/2018 10:42

Scottish, married to an Englishman and living in England:

Al-is-stir
Stroo-an
Shay-mus
Lach-Lan (pretty much the way it’s spelt!)
Roo-ree

Sophronia · 30/04/2018 11:11

Al-iss-tur
Stroo-an
Shay-mus
Lock-lan (but I think in Scotland it’s actually Lach-lan?)
Roo-ree

mintich · 30/04/2018 11:30

Already a little mixture!

padfootprongs · 30/04/2018 11:34

Ali-stair
Stru-an
Shay- mus
Lach-lan

The last one I honestly wouldn't have a clue Blushso would politely ask!

ClaudiaWankleman · 30/04/2018 11:36

Ali-stuh
Stroo-un
Shaymus
Lock-lun
Rory

FairfaxAikman · 30/04/2018 11:39

Scot here.

Alisdair - Alis-dare
Struan - Stroo-an
Seamus - Shay-mus
Lachlan - Lach-lan (with the soft ch as in loch)
Ruairidh - Roo-ray (as it's a name distinct from Rory)

TheDisreputableDog · 30/04/2018 11:45

Pretty much as above but would have to Google pronunciation of the last one Blush

SoupDragon · 30/04/2018 11:46

Alastair
Stroo-an
Shay-muss
Lack-lan (although I know lock-lan is a possibility)
Rooree

With an English accent and all that entails!

chuckiecheese · 30/04/2018 11:47

There is a child called Ruairidh in my daughters class. We live in England (both Scots)! However this poor lad is forever having to explain his name. He is almost bullied because of it were me I would think carefully about how I spelled these names.

I also know a Siobhan and Sinead who have a nightmare with their names. Sad

Raines100 · 30/04/2018 12:21

Ruairidh will get Rory in England, I'm afraid.
I like Struan best of those.

HoratioNightboy · 30/04/2018 13:03

AL-i-ster
STROO-in
SHAY-uh-mass
LACH-lan
ROO-a-ray

OP, if it's Scottish names you're interested in, I feel obliged to mention that Seamus is the Irish spelling of the name. The Gaelic spelling is
Seumas.

mintich · 30/04/2018 13:36

We've got Irish in the family too.
I want either a Scottish or Irish name, and from my list, those seem to be the ones that would probably cause the most trouble with pronunciation!
Wanted to gauge how much trouble 😂.
I do love the easier names like Angus, Hamish, Cameron etc!

OP posts:
GinGeum · 30/04/2018 13:47

Welsh here.

A-lis-dare
Stroo-un
Shay-mus
Lack-lan (saying the ck at the back off my throat like the welsh ‘ch’ sound)
And the last one I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin!

DairyisClosed · 30/04/2018 13:53

Al/is/dair
Stroo/un
Shae/mus
Lahkch/lun
Rue/air/id/hu

Groovee · 30/04/2018 13:55

Alastair
Stru an
Shamus
Lack lan
Roo Ray

Scottish living in Scotland

mintich · 30/04/2018 14:04

Bit worrying that Siobhan and Sinead would be problematic too I would have thought they were well known!

OP posts:
Juliecloud · 30/04/2018 14:06

Alistair
Stroo an
Shay mus
Loch lan
Ruari

I’m a Scot living in England. I would say that no one will know if you pronounce Alisdair with a T or a D. I know an Alisdair and he gets both. Mainly with a D.

There’s a Lachlan at school with my DC. The kids call him Lachlan but the teachers call him locklan.

LinoleumBlownapart · 30/04/2018 14:08

Alisdair - alis-stair
Struan - stru-an
Seamus - shay-mus
Lachlan - Loch - Lan
Ruairidh - Rory

I'm English, so probably wrong on some of those.

Notso · 30/04/2018 14:11

Alicedare
Strewan
Shaymus
Locklan
Roarree

LinoleumBlownapart · 30/04/2018 14:16

Why Ruairidh and not Ruaridh?

Ginger1982 · 30/04/2018 14:19

I'm Scottish, in scotland and have a Lachlan and I pronounce it Lach-lan with the 'ch' as in Loch. I hate Locklan unless you spell it that way.

Flicketyflack · 30/04/2018 14:20

I think people struggle with seemingly 'simple' names, my daughter has a three letter name and people pronounce that wrong!

Anything more 'complex' appears to blow peoples minds! Unless it is their own child of courseWink
