Our first baby is due in 3 months and we just can't settle on a name. My partner liked Iris and Zena for a while but has gone off them. I quite like Elodie but don't like the shortenings Elle or Ellie.

We're thinking Dahlia now, is this too 'out there', we want something a little bit unusual but don't want to lumber her with an awful name that people judge.

Any other suggestions? I dislike old lady type names, anything in the top 20 or so, want to avoid names with M due to surname. I like names ending a or ia. My partner wants something unusual.

We keep liking names then going off them and I don't want to name her then go off it but there's just none we love.

So basically is Dahlia awful, and any other suggestions?

Thanks Smile

I don’t think Dahlia is awful. They’re lovely flowers! Would you pronounce it Day-lia or Darl-ia?

Other ideas in a similar floral vein: Camellia, Flora, Violet (I love this but doesn’t work with our surname!). Though they might be more old fashioned than you want.

Or Cordelia, Daria, Delilah...

OpalIridescence · 29/04/2018 09:55

My sister in law is called Dalia, it's lovely.

Elodie is also a favourite of mine if you need a nickname I would go with DeeDee.

IAmMatty · 29/04/2018 09:55

My friend just had a Zora which I think is lovely

bridgetreilly · 29/04/2018 09:59

Dahlia (pr. day-lia) is fine. I don't like it pronounced dah-lia.

Could also consider:
Cecilia
Aurelia
Emilia
Fuchsia
Wilnelia

No name is awful. It's all a matter of personal preference.
Also how do you define unique. Laura although it's an ordinary run of the mill name that everyone is familiar with. It'seems pretty unique and unusual these days, same with Lisa, Suzannah,Amanda,
Georgina. Keira.
Some more unheard of names.
Rula, Araya, İraina, Bryah, Willa,

I love Dahlia, but the pronunciation conflict is an issue.

The flower (here) is pronounced day-lee-ah illogically so I would be very aware of the probability that many people will pronounce the name that way.

I love it, but only when pronounced dah-lee-ah, and, for that reason, I would probably never use it.

stellinaa · 29/04/2018 10:13

I like it! Some other suggestions would be:
Rania (love this one!!)
Nadia (DD's name Smile)
Cara
Angelina
Adelia
Kahlia
Adriana

AnyaMoondial · 29/04/2018 11:14

Lydia
Rosa
Maria
Sarah

AnyaMoondial · 29/04/2018 11:20

Heather
Julia
Viola
Miranda

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 29/04/2018 11:30

I'm not hugely keen on Dahlia, pronounced either way. I do like the following though:

Cara
Claudia
Pelagia
Lilia
Rosa
Saskia

Justfred · 29/04/2018 12:05

It would be Day lia like the flower. Yes I can see pronunciation being an issue though.

Zora is cool, our families would definitely wrinkle their noses however!

I love loads of the names mentioned, especially Viola, Lydia and Cara but my partner has already said he doesn't like them.

We both quite like Felicity, maybe Felicity Dahlia M.......
Also like Lila, worried it may be too girly for an adult though.

Just don't LOVE it, we were so set on a boys name, that would have been so much easier!

I would class Dahlia as an old lady's name in the mould of Daphne ,Iris and Audrey all of which are pretty and currently popular.

yikesanotherbooboo · 29/04/2018 12:50

Love Felicity

winterwonderly · 29/04/2018 12:51

Lilah
Celia
Coralie

Justfred · 29/04/2018 13:09

I do like Lilah, goes with our last name too.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/04/2018 13:42

Lilah is much nicer, very pretty !

manicinsomniac · 29/04/2018 14:48

Dahlia is fine, I think, especially if you're going with Day-lia (Dar-lia sounds a bit too lovey-dahling to me!)

Less common or Unusual names ending in a or ia. Not 'old lady' or M:

Amaya, Aliya, Anya, Aya, Ada, Aria, Alba, Aphra, Asha, Anika, Alexa, Ariana, Aurelia, Asia, Brenna, Clea, Celia, Cora, Dana, Daria, Danika, Elisa, Elina, Eliana, Fabia, Fenella, Greta, Iona, Joanna, Katya, Kyla, Lara, Lena, Luna, Livia, Leona, Larissa, Nia, Nyah, Nadia, Priya, Paloma, Rosina, Robina, Rowena, Rosalia, Ria, Saskia, Sylvia, Tamika, Thalia, Talitha, Xenia, Zia, Zelda

BewareOfDragons · 29/04/2018 14:52

I know an Elodie. She's Elodie. No shortening.

Dalia makes me think of the stupid, snotty rich girl on Suburbia now.

Justfred · 29/04/2018 15:06

I like Rosalia and Lena, shall see what OH thinks. I don't know what Suburbia is so that's not an issue for me!
