Strong girl names

As it's the centenary of women getting the vote I'd like a strong female name for my daughter political, musical or scientific name but not too unusual. My list included matilda Lydia Elza Jane Olivia Marie, aurora, lilly, lyra Anne, bess... Bodica? Too radical... I don't like the sound of matilda, could be tilly I suppose... I could have multiple middle names, but only want one, a family member as a middle name. Maybe I'll look up historical events around the due date, mid July and pick a name based on that.. Need to do some history homework...

Hilda means battle. I wish I had given it to my daughter. Or my absolute favourite, but waaaay out there in the UK, the Icelandic name Thorhildur: Thunder Battle or Thor's Battle.

Isolde means Ice Ruler and was high on our list, as was Indira.
Joan or Jeanne?

Embracethechaos · 27/04/2018 23:22

Haha I work with a hilda who lives up to her name, nice lady really but can't name my child after her.

Rosa (after Rosa Parks)
Josephine (after Josephine Baker)
Flora (after Flora Drummond)
Betty (after Betty Boothroyd)

Talith · 27/04/2018 23:26

Josephine

lottiegarbanzo · 27/04/2018 23:29

Diana, goddess of war

I do like Adela. Unusual but lovely. Zelda too.

Tilly sounds cutesy to me, not strong.

Lifeaback · 27/04/2018 23:58

What a fab idea as a way of marking history and naming your daughter. When she asks you the story of where her name came from she will get a much more interesting response than 'I just liked the name'!

I'm biased as have a Matilda but I love it most out of your current list. Others to consider-

Victoria (as in queen)
Rosa (parks)
Valentina (Tereshkova)- also means strength
Frida (khalo)
Florence (nightingale)
Edith (cavell)
Esther (Jewish queen)
Indira (ghandi)
Maya (Angelou)
Harriet (Tubman)
Freya (stark)

Audrey- means 'noble strength'
Millicent- 'strong at work'
Isadora- 'strong willed'

Aloisia/Elouise/Heloise famous warrior
Kendra - Great champion
Alexis - Great defender
Maeve- Warrior queen

Thanks lifaback. Tried to sleep, then tried to wake my husband up to talk about names but now I'm back online. We picked one months ago but I'd like to reconcider... I got stressed about Harriet (not our chosen name) , lovely for a child, had a friend in junior school called hattie but then in secondary school I knew a slutty teenage hattie at school, put me right off. Victoria is another example.. Nice idea but then you have vicky pollard. I don't like 'ee' names I've decided. Freida and Florence I like, and don't know anyone with those names. Haha. My grandma and her sister (recently passed) worked with computers and as maths teachers which is why I might go for a famous mathematician or coder.

Hedy after Hedy Lamarr who is finally getting the recognition she deserves for her part in inventing GPS and wifi. www.theguardian.com/film/2018/mar/11/bombshell-the-hedy-lamarr-story-review

tararabumdeay · 28/04/2018 01:49

Oh I know the beauty of Zelda.

Saria?

BitOfFun · 28/04/2018 01:51

Sylvia (after the Pankhurst sister)

Athena (classical)

Sparklynails7 · 28/04/2018 01:56

Matilda is fairly unusual nowadays so maybe go for that! Sounds so cute and you can shorten it to Tilly if you wanted to Smile

callmekitten · 28/04/2018 02:04

In defense of the name Lily... I named my DD after the flower Lily because lilies are bot strong an beautiful.

I love Maud but I know it's an acquired tasted.

Embracethechaos · 28/04/2018 06:11

I'm loving Adele Katherine, lots of notable Adele/adela and there are matching dates in her life and patterns is something my geeky family get excited about. And katz is nice if Adele doesn't suit, and kath was the name of a relative. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adele_Goldstine

Lilly is because I'm a lilly Allen fan... I know a family of girls who have all been shortened to lilly mily and tilly. Grin

A boy would be easy, we'd name him after both our grandads, boy baby names don't change much over time, I think they get passed down families more and men get recognised for their contribution. So much harder and more fun to chose a female name...

VileyRose · 28/04/2018 06:57

Lilith
Violet
Hazel
Isolde
Elizabeth

lottiegarbanzo · 28/04/2018 08:51

Adele Katherine is great. I love Kate and also Kitty as a nn for Katherine. Somehow it sounds more serious than most 'y' ending names.

Matilda nn Tilly is incredibly popular at the moment, to the point I'd avoid for that reason.

Evelyn is another nice, non-cutesie name.

lottiegarbanzo · 28/04/2018 08:55

Also Iseult and Anouk for interesting non 'a or y' names. Eleanor, Nancy for more usual ones.
