We're nearly there on name. Scottish in family but we Think nice, simple, not too common

Not Scottish if that is what you're after. Nice enough name though, meaning precious or my child.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 27/04/2018 20:42

Prefer Alannah.

StarlaMack · 27/04/2018 20:45

Lovely, I think it's Irish and usually spelt the way you spell it. Gaelic is close enough though!

Jdandturk · 27/04/2018 20:54

Yes, know not Scottish. Do like Scottish names especially boys, but ones we're keen on taken by friends / family children.

I know one Alanna, didn't know it was a real name as her father is Alan. To be honest, i always thought it was a shame as they must have wanted a son...
I don't really like male names with an a on the end... I also know a Walterina and a Williamina.....

Lead character from a book series by Tamara Pierce (a girl who wants to be a knight instead of a Lady) - great books so thumbs up from me!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/04/2018 21:20

I was going to be an Alannah after my dad Alan. However Mum and Dad changed their minds when I was born and went with Clare instead. My mum saId I came out with my name written all over me.

Jdandturk · 27/04/2018 21:22

Our choice has nothing to do with Alan. It wouldn't be our boy name. We both quite like Alanna or Alana.

I really like it. I like the Alannah spelling.

OublietteBravo · 27/04/2018 21:22

I'd spell it Alannah too. I quite like it as a name.

Orangedaisy · 27/04/2018 21:24

Love Alanna. Was on my shortlist but DP vetoed.

FluffyMcCloud · 27/04/2018 21:27

I love the name Alanna / Alannah

redmini4 · 27/04/2018 21:35

Know quite a few Alanas in their 20s. But fairly unusual. Nice name

SeraphinaDombegh · 27/04/2018 21:36

I love the name Alanna, though I may be biased because I know a lovely girl with that name. I'll go against the grain and say that I think spelling it Alannah totally ruins it. Stick with Alanna!

RiceBaby · 27/04/2018 21:44

Alanna comes from the Irish for "a child" (a leanbh), and is said affectionately.

Frazzled2207 · 27/04/2018 21:51

I prefer Alannah especially if the pronunciation is a-Lahn-a
Alanna looks to me like a-lan-a with a very short middle a

captainbizz · 27/04/2018 22:01

I don't like it really, especially with that spelling. It reminds me of A llama.

I prefer the Alana spelling tho

MargotLovedTom1 · 27/04/2018 22:05

It seems like a very 70s 'foxy lady' name to me, because I associate it with Alana Hamilton/Stewart. Bit like Raquel Grin.

Sophronia · 27/04/2018 22:09

I’d pronounce Alanna “a-LANN-a” and Alana “a-LAHN-a” differently.

LoveInTokyo · 28/04/2018 12:06

How would you pronounce it, OP?

I think Alana is obviously Al-aaaahna with a long A, whereas with Alanna or Alannah you will get some people pronouncing it with a long A and other people’s pronouncing it Al-Anna (to rhyme with Hannah).

RavenWings · 28/04/2018 12:12

Alannah is a nicer spelling imo. I do like the name.
