What are your thoughts on Eira for DD?

No Welsh connection if that matters

How would you pronounce it?

My initial thought would be no if there's no Welsh connection. And no again if she's going to born before the winter.

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 11:02

I'd say No.
Pronunciation issues, it just means snow, and it's a bit dated in welsh speaking communities.
It's popular on here, possibly due to the popularity of names like Ada, Eva, Ava, Isla etc.
I'd say it as something between Ayra and Eera.
It will get said as Ira.

Gorgeous!

stellinaa · 27/04/2018 11:26

Not a fan, sorry. It's a granny-ish name in my mind. What about Isla? Ara? or Aria?

ooobisto · 27/04/2018 12:43

Hmm seems the thinking is 'no' then . Thanks for the youtube link, I thought it was pronounced Ear-ra, not A-ra, am I wrong?

Faceicle · 27/04/2018 12:47

It's pronounced I-ra. And Wyn Eira is welsh for Snow White.

glitterbiscuits · 27/04/2018 12:53

Pronounced ‘eye-rah’

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 14:10

It isn't pronounced I-ra, although I do know an Eira who says it as Ira.
It would be written Aira to get the Ira pronunciation.
Welsh is phonetic.
Snow White is Eira Wen or Gweneira.

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 27/04/2018 14:19

I think it's lovely. And I don't get the attitude that you can't use it if you're not welsh.

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 14:24

I think it's lovely, pronounced properly. Pronounced Ira, i think it sounds ugly. Snow is pretty.
I'd think of another name.

Scottishgirl85 · 27/04/2018 16:26

Our three year old is called Eira. We live in SE England with Welsh connections on husband's side. His family are north wales where it's pronounced ay-ra. Get nothing but compliments and we love her name. She was born in February and it snowed within a few days of her arrival.

Scottishgirl85 · 27/04/2018 16:29

It is pronounced eye-ra in South Wales, I much prefer ay-ra, pronunciation in North Wales

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 16:39

Sod that. I'm from N. Wales where David is said as Dev-eed and Hayden as Hed-un, but that isn't how they are pronounced is it.

LucyEmma89 · 27/04/2018 17:45

That’s the way it’s supposed to be pronounced, so why would you pronounce it any other way?

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 27/04/2018 17:53

I love it. It was on our list for DC1 as they were due in the winter, but, we had a boy.

Jestem · 27/04/2018 17:54

I love it, love Welsh names!

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 18:48

Is that aimed at me LucyEmma? Eira is the welsh word for snow. It's pronounced like how welsh people say snow.
They wouldn't say "mae'n bwrw aira", they'd say "mae'n bwrw eira".

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2018 18:59

It's a bit like calling a baby Snow but saying it to rhyme with Now instead of No.

scurryfunge · 27/04/2018 19:05

I love it. I know one Eira and she is 94. ( mid Wales).

ificouldwritealettertome · 27/04/2018 22:39

Why are people so angry about other people's names and the pronunciation? We have an Eira in the family- it's a lush name and we love it

ooobisto · 27/04/2018 23:19

Totally confused now as to how to pronounce this name!

Eye-ra
Ear-ra
Ay-ra

???

OP posts:
Pidlan · 27/04/2018 23:26

It's Ey-ra. In North Wales, that is. South Wales might be slightly more ay-ra but e in Welsh is a flat e, like in bed or led.
It's not a middle-aged name at all here in Wales- I know loads of toddler Eiras.

MikeUniformMike · 28/04/2018 14:12

Why? Because some really beautiful names that are mispronounced become fairly popular, then the original pronunciation gets almost lost.

Names like Sophia and Maria are unlikely to be pronounced Sof-eye-a and Mar-eye-a now, but those were the original English pronunciation.
