Starting to think of names for our little girl, currently 35 weeks. What are all of your opinions of the name Naomi? I love it but have had mixed reactions from friends/family

Ironic that @LoveInTokyo finds the Japanese pronunciation stupid. (It's technically Na-oh-mee rather than Ny-oh-mee in Japan but hey ho)

No, it's not "Na-oh-mee." It's "Now-mee." Which is nothing like "Ny-oh-mee." "Eye-oh" and "Ow" are completely different vowel sounds.

I speak Japanese fluently, and I am assuming that LoveInTokyo probably does too.

(Repeated because the bolding didn't work in my first attempt)

I really like it.

AnyaMoondial · 24/04/2018 01:40

It's great. It looks really good written down as well.

My first post on baby names in 8 years of Mumsnetting
I love it. Star

My former MIL's name is Naomi and I love the name. My XMIL is an amazing woman; still going strong at 97.

InTheGhetto · 24/04/2018 03:17

I like the Ny-OH-mee pronunciation, not so much the NAY-uh-mee one (and didn't even know it was Japanese until now, so had never thought about the Nao-mi option, as odd as that sounds).

LiquoriceWheel · 24/04/2018 03:32

I didn't realise Naomi was such a cross-cultural name either! Learned something new today BlushSmile

That actually makes it an even better name, you should use it OP!

LoveInTokyo · 24/04/2018 07:59

Ha, I wish I could say I speak fluent Japanese but I don’t. It is Nay-Oh-Mi in English too though.

Ny-oh-mi is just a mispronunciation.

ClaudiaWankleman · 24/04/2018 08:58

I do think it’s worth recognising that Ny-oh-mi is a reasonably common mispronunciation though - you should be comfortable with the fact many people will mispronounce it!

Much like naming your child Theo in south Essex...

pipilangstrumpf · 24/04/2018 09:23

I would say Ny-omi and prefer it over Nay-omi

pipilangstrumpf · 24/04/2018 09:24

Actually I'd say Na-omi, as there is no 'i'

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 24/04/2018 09:27

It was my number one choice for my first daughter. I think it is beautiful.

regularbutpanickingabit · 24/04/2018 10:17

It’s a beautiful name.

Yogagirl123 · 24/04/2018 10:23

Yes very nice name

FizzyGreenWater · 24/04/2018 11:03

Ok. Bit dated, bit boring.

lindyhopy · 24/04/2018 11:05

i love it

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/04/2018 11:12

Lovely name. Nothing whatsoever dated or boring about it. It's been used since biblical times and I expect it will still be in use for many hundreds of years to come, long after some of the made up names currently in vogue are forgotten.

Not getting where the Nyomi pronunciation is coming from. I hear it pronounced in two different ways, and the difference is where the stress is put. It can either be NAYomi or NayOHmi, can't it?

LoveInTokyo · 24/04/2018 12:13

You’d think so, Gasp0de, but my friend Naomi gets called Nyomi a surprising amount. She says it sounds like a brand of surgical stockings or the latest health food craze you’d find on the shelves next to the quinoa.

Naomi is a lovely name though, and not dated.

FizzyGreenWater · 24/04/2018 12:17

I know someone who pronounces it Nyomi and it's her own name! Yes I would absolutely expect some people to pronounce it that way. I didn't think that was unusual? And yes there's also the stress on either first or secodn syllable issue.

But most people I think would say it Nay-OH-mi.

LoveInTokyo · 24/04/2018 12:50

Yeah, I also know someone who spells his name Rueben because his parents couldn’t spell properly.

Zaya71 · 24/04/2018 12:55

I love it. To be honest I think the two different pronunciations are similar enough to just live with - I know a Naomi who doesn't bother correcting people (she does however get a lot of strange spellings of it!)

StringyPotatoes · 24/04/2018 13:03

My name is Naomi and I pronounce it Neigh-omi. I also get called Neigh-umi, Nigh-omi and various other wonderful mispronunciations by children: shu-shomi, bi-moni, mo-romi.

I love my name and don't bother correcting anyone as they're all similar enough. I don't like it being shortened to Nome much though. And the constant misspellings are a pain but they fizzled out a lot once I left school.

Go for it OP (though I am biased!)

DuggeeHugs · 24/04/2018 13:08

Lovely name, I'd go for it

FizzyGreenWater · 24/04/2018 13:13

Oh and yes the shortenings! I'd forgotten Grin

One I knew at uni used to be Nomes.

So basically, Gnomes!

Used to get a few confused looks initially.
