Alfred?

Thinking of calling DS Fred but putting Alfred on the BC (Husband likes full names on BC to allow for more options as they grow up) not telling anyone IRL so looking for opinions really. What would you think if you met a baby Fred? Don’t really want it to be Freddie but I will accept it if it comes about naturally-but to us he will be Fred.

I think a lot of people would assume Fred was short for Frederick as Alfie is the more common diminutive of Alfred. But I really like Fred, it works equally as well on a toddler as a grown up in my opinion.

Tumbleted · 23/04/2018 17:10

Yes I thought that but don’t like Fredrick. Figure if we introduce him as Fred from day one then we can avoid Alfie (may change when he gets to school but that’s his choice)

Fred is short for Frederick.

Alfred shortens to Alf or Alfie, if at all.

Padfoot100 · 23/04/2018 17:32

Love baby Fred! And think it's a good idea putting Alfred on the BC as gives lots of name options.

Padfoot100 · 23/04/2018 17:33

I don't see why Alfred can't be shortened to Fred..

Tumbleted · 23/04/2018 17:40

Pip you do realise that diminutives don’t only come from the start of the name don’t you?

Alfred nn Fred is quite popular so I wouldn't think anything of it.

Tumbleted · 23/04/2018 17:42

Such as Arabella/Isabella-Bella, Matilda-Tilly, Antony-Tony, etc etc

I’m happy with the Alfred/Fred part I’m more asking what people would think if they met a baby Fred. Is it still too ‘old man’

Fred is cool, much cooler than the oh-so-common Freddie!! Plus it lends itself well to growing up with the child. Of course Fred can be a diminutive of Alfred!

StillMissV · 23/04/2018 18:11

I love Alfred and Fred - my grandad is an Alfred/Fred for short

Goosegrass · 23/04/2018 18:13

Fredo is often short for Alfredo in Spain so it’s not a huge jump!

JazzyJelly · 23/04/2018 18:13

I like Alfred. Makes me think of the saxon king.

Sophronia · 23/04/2018 18:42

I think Alfred nn Fred is fine. Wilfred could be another option.

FairyFantastic · 23/04/2018 18:44

I love the name Fred. I know a Freddie who's real name is Fred, so I guess I just see it as a full name in itself.
Alfred is lovely.

There's an actor called Freddie Highmore who's name is Alfred :)

chezmk1988 · 23/04/2018 18:48

I adore it x

WhatsGoingOnEh · 23/04/2018 19:03

I LOVE Alfred/Fred. I wish I'd called one of mine that, in fact.

Alf is a great hipster name, too. 🧔🏻

Do it! There's a cool King Alfred statue in Winchester. Total badass name.

neurotransmittens · 23/04/2018 19:11

Alfred is lovely and Fred is a good nn (better than Freddie which imo is awful and overused).

BossWitch · 23/04/2018 19:13

I like it... actually considering it myself if current bump turns out to be a boy, with Fred/ Freddie as nn.

Fred was an awesome character in Harry Potter too, which affects my judgement slightly Blush

Tumbleted · 23/04/2018 19:27

Can’t like BossWitch it’s one of my reasons too!!🙈

Thanks everyone! You have made me so much more confident in our decision! Excited to have a name for him!!😍

Fred is an epic boy name. I have a Frank which is of an equal old man genre and get complimented a lot.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 23/04/2018 19:36

Squee for the Harry Potter reference too!!

Alfred is like half Albus and half Fred. Two of the best characters!

Tumbleted · 24/04/2018 08:53

Thanks everyone! Now I just hope those pesky royals don’t steal it!🤞🏻

I much prefer Fred to Freddie. Sounds much cooler to me and less widely used. Was top of our list but we’re having a DD. Great name OP!

RosieCotton · 03/05/2018 22:05

I love it. Just as my 2 cents I would say it's worth giving a "full" name like you say as an option when he's older.

I named my son Toby. And everyone said I should name him Tobias and use Toby as his given name. That way when he's a grown name he has the option of using a "grown up" name. Oh how I wish I'd listened to others.

Alfred is a great strong name. I wouldn't say its an old name but a more socially accepted name for a man. Where as Fred is wonderful for a little boy. I know a freddie who wishes his mum had given him a "proper" name as hes now 27 and hates having what he insists is a nickname as a forename.
