Regret my babies name

She’s 7 months old and I have sleepless nights over it! Am I over reacting? I cringe when people ask me what her name is. It was my partners favourite name and we didn’t agree on any others. After she was born I think I was just in a whirlwind and said let’s call her Penelope like you wanted. Now I regret that! Even though he kept asking if I was sure.
Anyone else had these feelings?

I may be wrong but I think you can change the name on the birth cert up to a certain time? We have friends who did this. Suddenly got a Christmas Card love from A, B, C and X instead of the usual A, B, C, and D. Child was about 18 months old at the time.

MrsLemonadeBrain · 15/04/2018 21:27

What about Ella, lulu, Lola, poppy, polly, pip, I even knew a girl at uni who went by pepper.

If you really want to change it to something unrelated like susie or Gemma go for it. She’s your DD
All the best I hope you find a way to love your dad name xx

Figgygal · 15/04/2018 21:28

Aw I think it's lovely too

LynetteScavo · 15/04/2018 21:29

But it's a fab name!

Not overused, nor "out there"

Nell is a super cool nickname.

What's her middle name?

NapQueen · 15/04/2018 21:30

Penelope is a brilliant name. Love Nell and Penny as nn.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/04/2018 21:31

I like Penelope, but prefer Poppy as a nickname.

Laniakea · 15/04/2018 21:32

It's a good name for nicknames

YoucancallmeVal · 15/04/2018 21:33

My imaginary second daughter would be Penelope nn Polly. I think it is gorgeous.

HannahABC · 15/04/2018 21:35

Penny is a lovely nickname.

If you want to call her something else you definitely can (as long as you and DH can agree). I have a friend who gave her daughter a name that no-one could pronounce and legally swapped her first and second names before she was one. My aunt has used her middle name as her first name her whole adult life.

Are there are any particular reasons why you don't like it? It'll be unique when she goes to school. And she'll be associated with a glamorous woman with a Rolls Royce and a chauffeur (if anyone still knows who The Thunderbirds are).

buckeejit · 15/04/2018 21:36

I love Penelope & all the nn too. Is there any of them you like?

Corcra · 15/04/2018 21:40

Do you have another name that you love that you could change it to?

I love the name Penelope. And the nn's penny and especially Nell.

IMBU · 15/04/2018 21:43

It's a gorgeous name and I also really like the nick name Nell too!

campion · 15/04/2018 22:04

You can change a baby's name on the birth certificate for up to a year quite easily.
If you don't like it,change it. She won't know it's her name yet and what anyone else likes is irrelevant.

Baubletrouble43 · 16/04/2018 08:09

It's a lovely name. Agree use a nn I think penny is great. It's my mum's name. It's actually her middle name she's used it since a teenager as she loathes her first name which really is awful. Penny is lovely.

TatianaLarina · 16/04/2018 12:14

Yeah Penelope’s awful I feel your pain.

I’d change it to Nell.

TatianaLarina · 16/04/2018 12:14

Penny is a godawful nn.

BertrandRussell · 16/04/2018 12:19

What would you use instead? And how would your dp feel-you said it his favourite.

If you’re feeling very upset by this- it might be worth thinking whether you might be a bit depressed? It’s very common in the first year. How are you otherwise?

Mumzywumzy2 · 16/04/2018 12:42

I can’t believe how rude some people can be, this mummy is clearly having a hard time and to say yeah it’s awful I’d change it is rather insensitive. Penelope is a very elegant and strong name! I’d like to hear what your taste in names is like... Tatianalarina.

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/04/2018 12:45

Yeah I agree Tatiania were you not taught ‘if you have nothing nice to say...’ talk about kicking someone when they’re down!
Penelope is lovely and Nell/Nelly is adorable!

TatianaLarina · 16/04/2018 14:19

Seriously?

She doesn’t like the name, it’s fine she can change it. A friend of mine changed her son’s name at around the same time.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 16/04/2018 14:23

I'm very biased as my 7m old is also called Penelope bit I think it's a beautiful name. My DH chose it bit I love it.

If you're unhappy though it isn't too late to change it, or use a nickname? You can have Penny, Poppy, Nell, Nelly.....

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/04/2018 14:35

It wouldn't be my choice, it sounds like a name for a haughty middle aged lady into gardening.

nipplesandtoes23 · 16/04/2018 14:57

Makes me think of Penelope Cruz. She's gorgeous!

flissfloss65 · 16/04/2018 15:07

I like Penelope but it does sound very grown up.

Do you like any of the shortenings? Pip and Nell are cute for a small child. Or how about Elle?

kaytee87 · 16/04/2018 19:50

Penelope is lovely op and Penny is a very cute nick name.
