Short for...

Any idea why Annie isn’t short for Stephanie?

I’ve loved Annie for ages and it seems it would be a logical nickname for Stephanie, given that the name is literally pronounced “Stef”+“Annie”.

I’ve looked around online but amongst the dozens of name that come up Annie is never suggested.

Surely if “Becca” can be a nickname of “Rebecca” etc. then a natural nickname for Stephanie would be Annie?

Especially when you get things like “Peggy” as being short for Margeret or “Dick” as being short for Richard which both seem much more off the wall to me.

I think it’s where the emphasis lies. Similarly I would shorten Bethany to Beth and not Annie.

I see no reason why Annie couldn’t be a pet form of Stephanie, but then I have a friend known as Mothy (Timothy) and a cousin known as Topher (Christopher).

I don't think Stephanie sounds he same as Steph+Annie. STEPH-ah-nee only emphasises the first syllable.

Stephanie doesn't really sound like Steff-Annie, though, because of where the stress falls. But I guess you could use Annie if you want.

I would just use Annie. My great grandma was named that in 1900 so it’s been around a while now as an independent name and obviously Ann has been around forever.

You could if you wanted to but it seems a bit weird.

If you want to call your child Annie then either go for just Annie or use it as a nickname for Anne, Anna, Annabel etc.

Stephanie is pronounced Stefan-y,
Rebecca is pronounced Re Becca.
Annie could be short for a name that has 'ann' in it - Leanne, Anneli, Ann(e), Annabel, Hannah etc.
There is no connection between Stephanie and Ann.

I used to know a Jennifer known as Niffer. I thought that was ace Smile

Go for it. I would probably be surprised that Annie was short for Stephannie but I agree it does make sense.
My daughter is called Emily. I dislike the nickname "Ems" so I shorten it to "Mimi".

I went to school with a Joanne who was shortened to Annie. No reason you can’t do it if you want to.
