Is Archie so awful?

I've seen several people saying it's a horrible name. I know it's been overtaken by young mums (nothing wrong with that in my opinion) and has taken on a 'chavvy' feel, but it's actually a very traditional and classic name, which had its popularity rise in the 1880s. And was in the top names list until the 1930s. Archibald was on the list but so was just Archie. These were on the name lists of those years. Then had a dip and came back up. It's a very traditional Scottish name too. I don't understand the hatred for it. I think it's a very masculine sounding name. Just because it ends in 'ie' doesn't mean it's cutesy in my opinion!

I like it, if you like it and partner likes it, go for it.

Krakauer · 04/04/2018 09:14

You sound awful. You're still a snob even though you've put the word chavvy in quotes. And then you're moaning about it being 'overtaken' by young mums (though there's 'nothing wrong with this', oh no!). Just please go away.

SpongeCake23 · 04/04/2018 09:16

@Krakauer I think that's a bit unfair, that's certainly not what I mean. I don't really think any names are 'chavvy' but that's how I feel people see names like Archie. I obviously dislike names like anyone else. But I wouldn't call any name chavvy...because I don't know what that means.

I’ve seen some people use the long name Archer, because Archibald just seems far too old fashioned. I think Archer is ok but I don’t really like it. Archie to me is part of the Alfie fad.

Namechangemum100 · 04/04/2018 09:33

I don't mind it, however I really dislike nicknames being given as the full name.

I would opt for Archibald and as a pp suggested Archer on the birth certificate and then call him Archie.

It's telling same with names like Ralphy, Freddie, Alfie etc

ImogenTubbs · 04/04/2018 09:43

I like it, but then it was the name I gave to my Cat Smile

SpongeCake23 · 04/04/2018 09:46

We've both agreed on it. All other names we can't agree on. He likes Eric, I don't. I like George and Atticus, he doesn't.

I won't be using the full name Archibald or Archer, because I don't see the need. To me, he'd always be Archie, so why the need for a longer name on BC. I have a longer 'official' name and always go by the shorterned version, as does my partner and brother. I just wish my parents had given me the short version. I hate the long name.

No defiantly not its lovely.

Stickaforkinimdone · 04/04/2018 10:24

It's not horrible but it is very very popular-has been for some years. So as long as you don't mind that then go for it if you like it

piercinggelo · 04/04/2018 10:29

I love Archie.

RavenWings · 04/04/2018 10:39

Yes, I think it's cutesy and overly popular. If you like it, use it, but that is still my view on it.

RavenWings · 04/04/2018 10:40

And yes I agree that Archie blends into the Alfie, Charlie, Ollie etc names.

howthelightgetsin · 04/04/2018 10:42

Well then you’ve decided haven’t you? Think no more about it and go forward with the name you love.

Yes, imo it is awful and Archibald is even worse!

I also dislike Alfie.

pipilangstrumpf · 04/04/2018 12:50

I think it's a very masculine sounding name

I find the opposite, it sounds weak and cutesy. Not strong or solid at all. But that's just my opinion.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 04/04/2018 12:59

Hate is too strong a word but I think it’s very unoriginal, overused and bland. Archie is mates with Alfie, Charlie and yawn, yawn .,..

Bimbaloo · 04/04/2018 13:27

It already seems a bit dates to me as all the Alfies and Archies I know are about 7 now. Archibald is an abomination so I wouldn't call him that.

stellinaa · 04/04/2018 13:30

I love the name Archie!

Ikeameatballs · 04/04/2018 15:17

I like it, when I was pregnant with dd it was my favourite name for a boy though somehow when I was pregnant with ds I had gone off it a bit.

upaladderagain · 04/04/2018 17:45

It’s fine for a small tot or a dog, but not for a grown up man.

newmumwithquestions · 04/04/2018 17:49

I love it! But I would be put off by its popularity. We tried to pick names that, although not ‘far-out’ aren’t that common.

newmumwithquestions · 04/04/2018 17:50

I’m Scottish originally though in case that affects my views...

LJdorothy · 04/04/2018 17:55

It was my grandfather's name. Archie has been popular in Scotland for a long, long time, so don't let any worries about fads sway you. It's an excellent name.
