Amelia vs Emilia

My sister has just had a baby and named her Emilia-however she is getting annoyed as people keep saying Amelia. I haven’t said anything but to me they sound the same anyway?! How do you say ‘Emilia?’ Do you put more emphasis on the EM part? It’s a lovely name but I have a feeling my sister is going to spend a lot of time frustrated at this rate!

I think it's very hard to hear a difference. I do prefer Emilia though.

I pronounce them both the same. Emilia is Em-EE-lia. Like the Game of Thrones actress, who is the Emilia most people have heard of.

Inthedeepdarkwinter · 30/03/2018 10:46

Amelia said quickly sounds like Emelia really. So, it's going to be an ongoing issue. Emelia is a lovely name though.

I know girls with both names, and I pronounce them differently, as they start with an am or an em! I do think you need to see the names written down first though, as when children/adults say a name, it can be misheard.

I know someone who named her daughter Emelia, and now spends her days correcting the spelling...

I pronounce Amelia as ah-mee-lee-ah
But Emilia as Em-eel-ya.

It can be hard to hear the difference but Emilia is a much nicer name.

I used to work with two Emilias and I have to admit that I didn’t realise they weren’t Amelia till they emailed me. They sound really similar. Maybe she could shorten to Emma if it’s really bothering her?

inamechangedforthispost · 30/03/2018 13:09

I prefer Emilia but it is very difficult to hear the difference.

BunnyEars1 · 30/03/2018 16:21

I suppose where I'm from Amelia = A- mee-Lee-ah
Emilia = Eh-mee-Lee-ah

Emilia can also be pronounced Emm-ah-lee- ah thing Emily-ah.

chezmk1988 · 30/03/2018 16:24

Sounds same to me but prefer spelling Emilia

daisypond · 30/03/2018 18:47

They sound very similar, though not identical. Am-ee-lee-a versus Em-ee-lee-a. People thinking I'd called my child after a Games of Thrones actress would actually put me off it, so I prefer Amelia personally, though I don't dislike Emilia at all. I didn't realise it was such an old name either - older than Amelia, so now I'm warming to it much more.

SuperBeagle · 30/03/2018 22:00

I have an Emilia and most people assume she's an Amelia. They sound very similar, although I do think that there's a slight difference on the first syllable. I chose the name knowing that that would be an issue though, so not going to get het up about it.
