Thoughts for a girl. After the Scottish Island (and whisky made there). We are Scottish Smile

Immediate thought was whisky.

BertrandRussell · 29/03/2018 20:39

Whiskey. Ans one of those names that people will say "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that" all her life.

lizabes · 29/03/2018 20:45

My first thought was my friend's gorgeous doberman but it is a lovely name for a little girl.

LastNightsMakeUp · 29/03/2018 22:20

My first thought was Ser Jorah Mormont from Game Of Thrones... it's pronounced Jura (to my ear at least.) I don't know if that's a positive or negative for you. And he's a male character.

I wouldn't personally chose it as for me it falls into the 'not really a name' category. But we can't all like the same things and if I met a little Jura I'd probably not give it a second thought 🙂

TatianaLarina · 29/03/2018 23:17

It’s a départment of France.

I’d go for Iona myself.

HoratioNightboy · 29/03/2018 23:47

Love it, OP. Been in use for almost 200 years, so quite established for humans as well as islands and whisky! Grin

Winterfellismyhome · 29/03/2018 23:51

Jorah from Game of Thrones Grin

BlessYourCottonSocks · 29/03/2018 23:53

Whisky. C'mon! You can't name the lassie that.

It's like calling her Laphroaig.

littlepill · 30/03/2018 00:01

NOOooo! Don’t do it. Whisky and people will ask if it is jury. It doesn’t sound good on the ears...

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/03/2018 00:05

Sorry, not a good choice I'm afraid. My first thought was the company Jura who make (very) expensive coffee machines. Iona would be better but Jura doesn't work at all.

sycamore54321 · 30/03/2018 00:07

I thought of the French mountains. And would want to say it with that Z sound that sneaks into French 'J's. I don't think it works well as a personal name. Whatever about an island, I definitely would not want my parents to call me after a whisky or other booze

Lubyloo · 30/03/2018 00:25

Seeing it written down I just think of whisky. Hearing it though makes me think of dura and brain surgery so not keen! There are lots of beautiful Scottish names to choose from though.

Shenanagins · 30/03/2018 00:27

The paps.....need I say more!

Arcadia · 30/03/2018 00:37

I know of a Jura. I think the dad was from Bangladesh? Never heard it before or since elsewhere.

YourWanMajella · 30/03/2018 00:47

Makes me think only of scotch whisky. If I heard of a child called Jura I would assume her parents were big drinkers.

Refilona · 30/03/2018 00:53

Also means "swear" in Portuguese.

Refilona · 30/03/2018 00:54

As in "promise"

BradleyPooper · 30/03/2018 01:09

My coffee machine is made by Jura....

Jura?
Fozzleyplum · 30/03/2018 04:54

It's not bad, but I would hear it as "Jury". I know you've not asked for suggestions, but if I was looking to give a child a Scottish place name, I'd go for Torrin.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 30/03/2018 05:35

I also thought of the department in France. Plus it's an ugly sounding word. So a no from me.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 30/03/2018 05:51

My Dad is Scottish and a whiskey drinker and I've have never heard of Jura whiskey! I think it's a lovely name, especially in a Scottish accent.

LostInTheColonies · 30/03/2018 05:53

I like it, and there are way too many Isla(y)s around for sure.
What about Morven?
Wouldn't recommend Eigg, Muck or Rùm though Grin

Kion · 30/03/2018 05:55

I personally love the name for a cat or dog but for a person, especially a baby or child, I think it's too harsh sounding.
I've seen previous threads on this name where people comment on it sounding too much
like Durex!

Great, beautiful island though and there are so many more lovely Scottish names to choose from. Good luck OP.

imk8 · 30/03/2018 08:58

Great choice!

grandplans · 30/03/2018 08:59

First thought was Whisky.
