Izak?? Or something else?

mileender · 29/03/2018 13:02

Baby boy imminently arriving and Izak is our current top choice. I had a quick search on here though and general opinion seems to be it's "chavvy" which has put me off a bit! Am I making a big mistake?? Any other suggestions of similar names very welcome (other names we liked are Luka, Niko, Emil and Rafael).

Is that a variant of Isaac? Not sure why it's chavvy, but then, chavviness seems to be very much in the eye of the Mumsnet beholder.

I like Rafael of your other choices.

DeathByMascara · 29/03/2018 13:04

Isaac is a nice name. Izak looks as though you’re trying to be yooneeek

QforCucumber · 29/03/2018 13:04

why not Isaac? or are you of polish etc. heritage so the spelling would be correct?

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2018 13:04

It’s a good name but the spelling is bad. Go for Isaac.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/03/2018 13:05

I love Emil.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/03/2018 13:05

Personally I'd say the spelling makes it seem chavvy. Spell it Isaac instead.

I like Rafael and Emil too.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 29/03/2018 13:06

It's an established version of Isaac.

I Googled it and brought up a load of Polish site links.

Isadora2007 · 29/03/2018 13:06

It’s the spelling that is a bit chav unless it’s a cultural nod of yohve Polish roots etc.
I also like Rafael.

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2018 13:07

Izaak Walton the author had Zs, albeit 2 of them. it’s not really a “try too hard” spelling. I prefer Emil though.

Ohyesiam · 29/03/2018 13:08

I think the spelling is seen as “ Chevy” rather than the name.

Bexter801 · 29/03/2018 13:09

I love Isaac, not sure about it Izak! Noah,Jude are another 2 favourites

ILookedintheWater · 29/03/2018 13:11

I realise that this won't apply if the spelling has cultural links for you/your family, but It looks like Izal to me.

mileender · 29/03/2018 13:11

Thanks! DH is from eastern Europe, not Poland but somewhere else where they use the 'Izak' spelling. Also, DS will have an eastern European surname if that makes a difference?
Have thought about Isaac but we spend a lot of time in DH's country (and DS might end up in school there at some point) and people would pronounce the 'c' as 'ts'.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 29/03/2018 13:15

Isaac. If you call him Izak it will be pronounced is-ack.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 29/03/2018 13:16

Oh given your latest update it makes more sense.

SlowlyShrinking · 29/03/2018 13:18

Call him Izak. So parochial and ignorant of people on here to call a name ‘chavvy’ because it has a non-English Shock spelling

QforCucumber · 29/03/2018 13:40

I like the name, there are 2 Isaacs at DS nursery, completely understand with the Eastern European surname - hence my ask, the Issac spelling would seem odd in that case.

HuskyMcClusky · 29/03/2018 13:42

I like it, but I 💓 Rafael.

Knitjob · 29/03/2018 13:44

Perfectly valid reason for an unusual spelling.
Is it pronounces just like Isaac? I think it's a lovely name.

GnotherGnu · 29/03/2018 13:45

It makes me think of Izal toilet paper

Just stick with Isaac.

YourWanMajella · 29/03/2018 13:46

Izak looks as though you’re trying to be yooneeek

I always wonder if people realise how provincial and vaguely racist they sound when they say this kind of thing about perfectly normal names from other countries/cultures?

mileender · 29/03/2018 13:48

Yes, we'd pronounce it like Isaac. It's very uncommon where DH is from and there people either pronounce it like "Isaac" or as "EE-Zak", depending on which region they are from..
I don't like the EE-Zak pronunciation as much though, which is the other reason I've been hesitating on the name!

We thought about Izak for our son Isaac. The only reason i didnt use it was the harsh middle sound of the Za with my accent. I think its a great variation of Isaac and given DH id say use it. :)

clairehr · 29/03/2018 14:11

I love it.

Isaac is my favourite boys name (waiting for OH to ok it) due to its meaning.

RapunzelIsHere · 29/03/2018 14:27

Yes, I like it OP. The spelling isn’t likely to cause issues with pronunciation.

There are quite a lot of Isaacs though, so I don’t know whether the popularity will put you off?
