April - Nickname?

Husband and I both really like the name April. (Baby will be born in Summer, not AprilSmile) DH though has one reservation though - a nickname. He basically doesn’t want the name being shortened to “Ape” or “Apes”. I don’t really mind to be honest as only really close friends or family tend to affectionatly shorten your name to something and if she doesn’t like it she can tell them to not use it. He just doesn’t like the sound of it and thinks she could get bullied because of it too. We both think that April as a name is beautiful but I would be gutted if he vetoed it because of the potential abbreviation.

What do you all think?

I know an April, beautiful little girl. No one shortens her name, she’s always April Smile

ChocolateCrunch · 26/03/2018 06:55

I know an April too, she doesn't have her name shortened either.

AnyaMoondial · 26/03/2018 07:51

The Aprili know is always April. If you wanted a shortening you could shorten to 'A'.

AnyaMoondial · 26/03/2018 07:52

*I know

PalePinkSwan · 26/03/2018 07:54

The April I know is always called April. Or tiggs but that must be some kind of family joke.

kaytee87 · 26/03/2018 08:02

I don't think people would shorten it tbh. She might be asked if she was born in April a lot

juneau · 26/03/2018 08:06

My SIL is April. No one shortens it. She was pissed off because we got married in April and it's 'her month' Grin

IVflytrap · 26/03/2018 10:44

You could always set a precedent and nickname her something different and get people to follow your lead. Ace? Ay? Aylee? Ril? Pril? Grin

While I agree that some people can get through life without their name being shortened, I have family members who use nicknames as a sign of affection, so it's easier to give them something to go on than ask them never to shorten names. Smile

HeartySoup · 26/03/2018 11:36

It doesn’t need shortening! When she’s born, you may well use a pet name for her at home that has nothing to do with her name.

RosieCotton · 26/03/2018 12:16

I think April is a lovely name. I dont think anyone would shorten it. And if so just stamp it out. My son is Isaac i didnt think it could be shortened until his dad called hom Ike. I quickly put a stop to that. Lol.

MadMaryBoddington · 26/03/2018 12:27

April is beautiful and one of those names that tends not to get shortened. It was on my list. I hate nicknames so I deliberately chose a similarly none shortenable name for dd - Audrey. The only person who shortens it is me Hmm.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/03/2018 15:25

April is lovely, it doesn't need shortening.
Depending on her middle name, if she has one, you could use the initials. For example, April Jane (AJ).

TooMuchGreys · 26/03/2018 15:34

Thank you all for taking the time to respond!

Hopefully DH will see all these and get over his worries 👍🏻

As long as she doesn’t become a prime target on April Fools Day I think using the name will be all good Wink Grin

It's a lovely name, the two I know both get called Apes, neither have had any problems due to this. I would say that even if it does get shortened, for example by school friends, I doubt it's the kind of nn that she would introduce herself as or that she would always been known as in the same way that a nn like Becky or Vicky would (if that makes sense!)

sycamore54321 · 26/03/2018 20:19

MN seems obsessed with shortening names, in a way that doesn't correspond with my real life experience, especially not girls' names.

If really worried, you could consider Avril as an alternative? French for April and used as a name in English.

MikeUniformMike · 26/03/2018 20:21

I know an April. Known as April, but I don't know an Amy who doesn't get called Ames, so your DD might end up being Apes.

Speedy85 · 26/03/2018 20:24

I'd go with Riley for a nickname. It's a different vowel sound on the 'i', but close enough.

And maybe Apricot if you want a cute pet name.

Lol my name is april and i was born on tax day😂

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/06/2024 05:29

April won’t get shortened in a formal way, where you’re known day to day as a different name to the one on your bc, eg. Liz, Kate, Jenny, Penny (she won’t introduce herself as Apes). She might get “Apes” in informal chat, e.g. Sophie - Soph, Chloe - Chlo, Amy - Ames, Zoe - Zo etc. (particularly in secondary school) but she’ll be known as April 90% of the time.

Firsttimebabymummy · 22/06/2024 07:41

April is lovely
