Is Caspar too 'out there'?

Am expecting DS2 in June and we are struggling with names. I came up with Caspar a few weeks ago and really quite like it. DH is a bit 'meh' about it, but admits he can't think of anything else, and if I like it, he's happy to let me choose. The only thing he has offered is Alexander, which I'm pretty indifferent to.

DS1 is Leo, which miraculously DH and I both managed to agree on quite early on.

Our surname is a little bit French sounding, although we are both British. Middle name is likely to be William (a family name)

We are expats in a very multicultural city in the Middle East, so there's no chance of anything we chose sticking out or being considered a bit weird at nursery or school.

Family are back in the UK but siblings and cousins have all gone fairly traditional for their DC - Thomas, Jack, Charlie, Hannah, Emily etc. I am imagining my parents and grandparents thinking 'wtf' when we announce it.

Is Caspar weird? Am I going to regret it? I really like it, it works well with Leo and our surname, I don't think it will age and if I heard it, I would think 'cool name'.

It's not my cup of tea but if my like it then use it.

HoratioNightboy · 25/03/2018 14:58

I love it but don't know any in real life, just in popular culture, e.g. Friendly Ghost and Steve McClaren's snake. Prefer Casper spelling, as like a PP, the -ar ending feels like it should have the emphasis on the last syllable.

Love it, it was our boy name for DD. I don’t think it’s that out there. If you’re worried, Jasper is similar, sounds great with Leo, and is a bit more popular.

Oysterbabe · 25/03/2018 16:06

I like it. We have a Leo. We were also considering Xander, which is obviously a shortening of Alexander but we would have just used Xander. We also liked Rudy, Jesse and Jude.

lovelyjubilly · 25/03/2018 17:01

I much prefer Caspian.

HeartySoup · 25/03/2018 17:30

I love it.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/03/2018 17:33

I think Caspar, Casper, Kasper etc are becoming quite usual names. I would go for Caspian to be a little different.

upsideup · 25/03/2018 17:37

Its quite popular with the todlers around us so not that out there but its lovely.
I prefer Caspian though

stellarfox · 25/03/2018 17:59

I love Caspar! This spelling is my preference.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/03/2018 21:05

Casper looks wrong to me. I do like the name though but spelt Caspar.

PrimeraVez · 27/03/2018 10:35

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate the feedback! I am now 99% sure that we will go with Caspar - so much so, that I have ordered a 'Caspar' name plaque to match the 'Leo' one that DC1 has on his bedroom door Grin

Ah that's lovely OP. Caspar and Leo go really well together.

KittenBeast · 27/03/2018 10:44

My sons friend is called Kacper (pronounced Casper) I love it!

Mummblebee · 27/03/2018 11:34

I think he'll probably be made fun of . Casper the friendly ghost etc.

Buxbaum · 27/03/2018 11:43

The Casper the Friendly Ghost film came out in 1995. It's hardly a topical reference.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/03/2018 12:25

Children born today won't have a clue who Casper the ghost is Confused

PrimeraVez · 27/03/2018 17:28

Anyway, is Casper the Friendly Ghost a bad association? Even if kids do somehow make the connection with a film made in 1995?!

I adore caspar, it was on my list (prefer a to e!)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/03/2018 21:06

I know a Caspar, brother to Felix & Harry. I don’t think it’s weird, same vein as Felix I’d say.

Fia256 · 29/03/2018 06:01

We found out at the weekend we are having a boy and are naming him Casper. I really don't think it's an out there name anymore, especially after reading this thread!

And as for the comment about being picked on because of the film, don't most names these days have some form of reference to them! My kids have absolutely no idea who Casper the friendly ghost is and I doubt many of their friends do either, it's an old film now!

Definitely go for it! I can't wait for our own little Casper to be here Smile

Dixiestampsagain · 29/03/2018 14:06

There is one in my DC school although it’s apparently spelt the Polish way (I can’t quite remember it so won’t butcher it by trying!)- it doesn’t seem out of place at all.

windchimesabotage · 29/03/2018 14:12

I think its a lovely name but id personally not use it because of 'friendly ghost'

How about Caspian?

ashleaka · 01/04/2018 13:15

I think it’s lovely and agree on traditional spelling! It would’ve gone on our list but our surname has similar sounds and it didn’t quite go.

CyrilSneer30 · 01/04/2018 22:13

Great choice! I have a 15 month old (Christmas day baby) called Caspar Felix Smile love how many people have mentioned Felix as a sibling name! Have only ever had positive comments to his name

TidyDancer · 02/04/2018 11:59

Casper spelling is nicer I think, Caspar potentially leads to an odd pronunciation. Overall, Alexander would be my choice though.
