Is Millie a pet name/recognised shortening of the name Emily?

Not really
Emelia, yes but not Emily

bridgetreilly · 20/03/2018 00:05

No.

Cavender · 20/03/2018 00:10

No.

Most Emiliys get Em or Emmy. It’s not really a name that needs shortening though tbh.

Thelampshadelady · 20/03/2018 00:20

I’m an Emily. I’m mainly called Em or Emily.

ReggaetonLente · 20/03/2018 00:23

I knew one at school. She’d be late twenties now.

MyKingdomForBrie · 20/03/2018 00:28

I hadn’t heard it used for Emily, but if you always refer to dd as Millie it will probably get picked up on generally. It’s always tricky to try and ‘choose’ a nick name though as they do tend to come naturally rather than be insisted on I think?

pipilangstrumpf · 20/03/2018 08:23

Why would you choose Emily and then drop the E? It's part of the name and not difficult to say.

User27839494 · 20/03/2018 08:43

I know an Emily nn Milly. It’s literally part of the name so why wouldn’t it be an appropriate nn?? If you like it, use it. Nn don’t always have to be the most obvious diminutive.

Newtothismumthing · 20/03/2018 08:45

Of course it can be! There are no rules!! :)

fessmess · 20/03/2018 08:45

I know an Emily, been called Milly since a toddler. Don't know why she wasn't called Milly tbh.

fizzandchips · 20/03/2018 08:54

I know a Emily, known as Milly - have never understood why it’s not a nn for Emily. Her parents felt Emily was a grown up name and Milly was sweet for a little girl, with the option to use grown up name. I can’t disagree with their logic.

MammieBear · 20/03/2018 09:40

Nicknames will come to you naturally you don't need to plan them that being said I'd say yes you can use Millie, Em, Emmy and so on...

MadMaryBoddington · 20/03/2018 09:54

Why not just called her Millie if you like Millie?

Pinkponiesrock · 20/03/2018 09:59

I’ve got an Emilie, pronounced the same as Emily.

I went for an ie at the end as our second name is regularly shortened into a nickname that ends in Y so I didn’t want two Y endings, the most ridiculous reason I know Grin

Anyway back to the actual topic, our Emilie is never Milly but often Ems or Elle, they are just NN that have developed as she grown.

Of the 4 Millie’s I know, 3 are Emily and one is Amelia
