I've seen this name a few times recently but not sure how it's pronounced ? It's so pretty written down!

Is it Ez-May
Or Ez-Me

Or something else?

Ez may

CrackingEggs · 16/03/2018 22:45

It's Es-me if it's spelt Esme. As in "me too".

It's Es-may if it's spelt Esmé. As in "may I?"

In my opinion :) And a lovely name.
The Salinger book is "For Esmé-With Love and Squalor"

Bonkersblond · 16/03/2018 22:47

Mine’s definitely an Es-me, she gets called both pronunciations though, doesn’t bother me but for some it might.

pimlicolife · 16/03/2018 22:53

Ez me

PinkAvocado · 16/03/2018 22:55

Ezmee unless it had an accent over the last e. I prefer this pn too. I like the name Esme and dislike Esmé!

MollyHuaCha · 16/03/2018 23:01

Ez-mee - beautiful name.

Ohyesiam · 16/03/2018 23:03

Ez me

EleanorXx · 16/03/2018 23:04

Ez-May

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 16/03/2018 23:06

Ez-mee

HonkyWonkWoman · 16/03/2018 23:07

I know two Esme both pronounced Ez-mee!

DiegoMadonna · 16/03/2018 23:26

I'd say ez-mee for Esme
and ez-may for Esmé

JellySlice · 17/03/2018 00:31

I've known two Esmes. The male Esme pronounced his name Ez-mi. The female Esme pronoun need her name Ez-may.

JellySlice · 17/03/2018 00:32

Bloody autocorrect as usual.

The female Esme pronounced her name Ez-may.

SuperBeagle · 17/03/2018 02:06

Ez-may.

Never heard ez-me here in Australia. Ez-me sounds awful.

Buxbaum · 17/03/2018 02:38

I’d say ez-may unless corrected.

toastyarmadillo · 17/03/2018 03:46

This is my nieces name who's 19, it's spelt Esmè and pronounced Ez-may. That said various older relatives call her ez-mee as well, but her parents state it's definately with a may on the end.

Joeybee · 17/03/2018 05:04

Ez-May

Grobagsforever · 17/03/2018 07:54

Out of interest are most Esmes Esmerelda or do most ppl just put the short from on the birth certificate? I love mine being Esmerelda as it means she has more options

Bonkersblond · 17/03/2018 10:41

Grobags - mines just an Esme, mostly Essie as a pp, but Esmeralda as a ‘I need you to do something’!

Superbeagle - how rude, maybe the name just doesn’t cut it with an Aussie accent.

florascotia2 · 17/03/2018 11:14

Esme and Esmeralda have two different origins.

Esme (with an acute accent over the final e) is the past participle of a French verb, used as an adjective. It means 'esteemed' or 'beloved'. It was originally used as a male name; in French, the final single e spelling is male. The female equivalent would be Esmee (with an acute accent over the middle e). But today the male version seems to be used as a female name.

Esme is sometimes used as a short form of Esmeralda, a 'jewel' name. Esmeralda means Emerald in Spanish.

lovelsa · 19/03/2018 12:23

I've only ever met Es-mays. Never an Es-me.

dancingunicorns123 · 20/03/2018 10:23

Only Esmes I know are Ez-may

MammaH2018 · 20/03/2018 10:25

Ehz-may

bringbackfonzi · 20/03/2018 13:14

Ez-mee. I also prefer this pronunciation.

bringbackfonzi · 20/03/2018 13:17

On a similar note, I think Bronte (as in Charlotte and Emily) should be pronounced Brontee not Brontay. But that has those two dots over the e, unlike Esme.
