Dh really likes the name winter for a girl and I do like it but our baby is going to be born in may so seems like an odd choice, I also really like summer and don’t mind autum but dh isn’t keen on either of these?

It's not my cup of tea but nn Winnie is cute.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/03/2018 00:06

I wouldn't call a girl born in May Winter
Just as wouldn't call a gIrl born in January Summer. However I'm probably in the minority.

StickStickStickStick · 07/03/2018 00:11

She will always be asked if she was born in winter or have people surprised at her birthday in May. You may have to go for Spring;) or go for a spring flower?

SuperBeagle · 07/03/2018 00:49

I don't like Winter.

At least Summer has the benefit of being named after a good season. Winter's bleak, grey, rainy etc. (well, it is in the UK). Not a great connotation.

Globetrotter100 · 07/03/2018 00:55

May is a lovely name.

Joeybee · 07/03/2018 02:31

Don't like Winter as a name, and definitely not for a baby born in May! Winter is getting pretty popular, and Wint/Win/Winnie are nice nicknames.

Madwithjealousy · 07/03/2018 02:50

Love Winter; don’t like any of the nicknames suggested !

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/03/2018 02:56

Could you move to the Southern Hemisphere to have the baby?!

In actual fact, I don't think when the baby is born needs to have any bearing.

'Why are you called Winter, were you born in Winter?'

'No, my parents just liked the name'.

End of convo.

I feel fairly certain that many Summers weren't born in Summer. I certainly wouldn't occur to me wonder that, let alone ask the person.

ChocolateCrunch · 07/03/2018 03:12

I know a few Summers who don't have summer birthdays, so I think it's fine to go with Winter.

HuskyMcClusky · 07/03/2018 03:44

I don’t think the birth season matters, but I don’t like winter as a name. It’s...cold and wintery. Confused

Summer is much happier. Or Autumn.

toffee1000 · 07/03/2018 04:26

No. Winter isn’t a name to me, it’s a season. I know Summer is fairly “accepted” but its usage is much more widespread. Winter is all cold and frosty to me, I’d choose a cheerier name.

Cavender · 07/03/2018 04:40

I’m not keen in it anyway and I think a summer born Winter would strike a slightly odd note. (Sorry)

AuntieStella · 07/03/2018 05:19

Winter is a boys name to me, because that's it's normal Victorian sex (and it's in my family tree).

And yes, I think it would look extremely odd for something that is not an established name (where people have forgotten the meaning) to be used out-of-season

Speedy85 · 07/03/2018 05:37

Why are you called Winter, were you born in Winter?'

’No, my parents just liked the name'.

End of convo.

Repeat 10,000 times and they’ll be sick of it though!

Elfyn · 07/03/2018 09:21

Winter is lovely. I do this she would be asked all the time if she was born then, but I still think you can use it for a May baby.

Elfyn · 07/03/2018 09:23

Or how about Aster, Clover, Piper, Juniper as alternatives?

StickStickStickStick · 07/03/2018 09:25

May is a lovely name. June is really pretty too. (And April for that matter. How come the other months aren't names!?)

toffee1000 · 07/03/2018 16:23

January is sometimes a name.

DramaAlpaca · 07/03/2018 16:25

It's a season or a surname to me.

TheNailClippersAreBlunt · 07/03/2018 18:32

I like it as a middle name. I remember ages ago there was a thread with a lady who was having twins, one of the names was Vivienne Winter, I thought that was beautiful.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/03/2018 19:04

Actually as a middle name, it's a lot cooler (ha!). Way better than the usual filler - Rose / Grace / May type names.

grasspigeons · 07/03/2018 19:07

I know a Winter-May

NewYearNiki · 07/03/2018 19:08

I knew a Summer who had a December birthday.

It really doesn't matter.

Nice name.

BewareOfDragons · 07/03/2018 19:14

Please tell me it's not so he can say, "Winter is coming." And snicker.

flumpybear · 07/03/2018 19:19

Hhhmmmm how about May? Hmm

may isn't winter so seems a bit weird but if you're not worried about looking a bit strange ie just saying 'because we like the word' then go for it
