Lachlan? I hear two different pronunciations and I know which one I would use. But I want to see if I would be constantly correcting people!

We considered this name for our DS but decided against precisely because of the pronunciation thing. We ended up picking another name and only when we introduced him to relatives did I realise that also had 2 variations of pronunciation and I kept having to correct them all!

FWIW I would pronounce it loch-lan

mintich · 06/03/2018 16:54

@doublew what's the other name? It's probably on my list if you like Lachlan

Seems like it's not just older people who say Lach-lan then! Why are there two pronunciations?!

Lach(as in Loch)-lan. I'm 28 and Scottish if that helps your survey Wink

Ledehe · 06/03/2018 17:05

It's Lackh lin and has been a boys name in my family tree for centuries. We're Scottish, if it was pronounced like loch surely we would spell it that way. It's very popular in Australia and pronounced loch there. If you prefer the loch way then maybe spell it that way

mintich · 06/03/2018 17:05

Haha problem is, I'm not even in Scotland I'm in Essex now so not sure how people here would pronounce it first

No I like the Lachlan pronunciation...Just worried I'll be constantly correcting people, but I really like the name!

I would pronounce it Lach-lan (soft ch)

Lauchlan would give you the lock sound but still soft ch.

fuckoffsnow · 06/03/2018 17:10

In Essex?? You've got no chance of anything like a sensible pronunciation Grin You'd need to be happy with Larcklarn.

As someone who has a child with an Irish spelling for one of the DC's names, I urge caution. His name has a different pronunciation where we are in Fife to what we intended, and it's forever causing problems for everyone who hasn't heard him say his name before they see it written down. If I could go back in time I'd change it, and in the mean time I hope he gets some sort of nickname or decides to go by his relatively sedate middle name.

LadyPug · 06/03/2018 17:13

I would say Lock-Lun. I know one spelled the Irish way “Lochlan”

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 06/03/2018 17:14

I'd go with Lach-lan, but would know it could easily be Loch-lan as both are routinely used. I know several from the ages of 2 - mid 20s and I would say it's probably half and half on the pronunciation.

Never Lack or Lock-lan though. Always with the guttural "ch". I'm in NE Scotland by the way, but originally from NI and know boys/teens/young men from both places with the name.

FinallyARainbow · 06/03/2018 17:23

I'd say Lach-lan but I know of a Lochlan
at DS nursery (Glasgow area).

HoratioNightboy · 07/03/2018 00:22

Scottish here, know four, all pronounced Lach-lan. One known as Lachie for short, also pronounced Lach-. Never heard one pronounced Loch-lan with this spelling.

I'd only pronounce it "och" if spelled with an 'o', 'ou' or 'au'. I think that sound is Irish, and the "ach" sound Scottish?

CountFosco · 07/03/2018 00:29

Scottish and I'd pronounce it as it's spelt with an 'a' and the 'ch' as in loch. We live in England and avoided names for the kids that the English would mispronounce so e.g. didn't call either of our DDs Kirsten (which I love) because when the English try and say it they sound like they are straining to do a shit.

Junijuli · 07/03/2018 08:09

Lock-lun

mintich · 07/03/2018 15:25

Hmm this might have to cone off the list too. I removed Gregor and everyone seemed to pronounce it with too much emphasis on the or part! Greg-OOOR

TheOriginalEmu · 07/03/2018 17:10

loch-lan.

meala · 07/03/2018 17:19

My son is Lachlan and is pronounced lach -lan. Definitely not lack!! It needs the soft "Ch" sound. No one has ever mispronounced it as "Loch" lan. This would be spelt as Lochlan. I am in Scotland though.

mintich · 07/03/2018 17:46

Ive just realised in my OP I've written lack-lan as one of the pronunciations but that's just my auto correct going to lack. I wondered why everyone keot telling me its a ch sound 😂
I would obviously pronounce it with ch but don't think anyone down here would. I was more concerned with the a or o sound. Seems about 50-50.

LiviaAD · 07/03/2018 18:47

Lack - lan - Scottish here too.

JazzTheDog · 07/03/2018 18:56

Lach-lan (soft ch like loch not a hard k sound) - I am also Scottish.

Any Loch-lans i've known have been spelled au or o.

afishnotabird · 07/03/2018 19:09

Lach-lan

My friends surname is McLachlan, pronounced like that.

UserDeleted · 07/03/2018 19:21

Lock-ln

I'm Scottish but the first time I heard the name was on Home & Away and they used the Lock pronunciation. Blush. Showing me age there. Grin

tenforthat · 07/03/2018 19:34

Lock-lan. However it's pronounced it's a lovely name. My daughter has a name that can be pronounced two ways but I don't mind as I like both versions and she doesn't mind either - she's getting good at telling people the right way if they mispronounce it though! Don't let it put you off!

Thistlebelle · 07/03/2018 19:40

I’d say Lach-lan and suggest that the reason there are two pronunciations is that lots of English people just can’t say the “ch” (as in loch) sound that exists in Scottish English and instead say “ck” (as in lock).

(That’s not a dig by the way, the sound doesn’t exist in English English, so there no reason to have learned it)

I think Lach-lan is lovely but I’m not very keen on Lock-lan personally.
