Sounding out names

Do you sound out names before naming?

I'm curious because I've come across siblings called Lars and Anya, to me sounds like lasagna.

So just wondering if you sound out names with partners, friends, family, to see if they sound like anything?

I know a woman with a Sam and Ella who obviously didn't follow your suggestion!

Cosmoa · 05/03/2018 12:20

My twin siblings are Ellis and Samuel. Someone misheard and thought they were called Sam and Ella or.. 'Salmonella' haha!

YummyYumYum · 05/03/2018 12:22

I wonder if anyone has ever mentioned it. Any of Lars & Anya, or Sam & Ellas friends when they've gone to school.

I always thought that Same and Ella was an urban myth.

SashaGem · 05/03/2018 13:07

*Sam

MikeUniformMike · 05/03/2018 20:55

I know siblings called Thomas and Geraldine.

SuperBeagle · 05/03/2018 21:36

Sam and Ella would hardly be an urban myth considering the popularity of both names.

SashaGem · 05/03/2018 23:42

But together?

Sam and Ella Grin

I always thought that Sam and Ella was an urban myth

In my region they're the names of characters used to teach children about food hygiene!

Not quite as openly punny, but when I was little I lived next door to two sisters called Laurie and Heidi. Heidi was older so by rights it should have been "Heidi and Laurie" but everyone always called them "Laurie and Heidi," and it was only when one of the other children in our road (possibly accidentally) referred to them as "Laurel and Hardy" that I realised why it just sounded so much more right that way round!

I've got a friend called Sam and his twin is Ella. To be fair his parents named him Samuel, but still should have seen it coming.

clementine100 · 09/03/2018 15:04

@MikeUniformMike what's wrong with Thomas and Geraldine?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/03/2018 15:26

Tom and Jerry Grin

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 09/03/2018 18:49

I know someone with Sam and Ella.

I did check my name choices with a friend in case there was anything bad I hadn't spotted.

Lars and Anya don't sound like lasagne unless you have an accent specific to the south of england though.

I say laz to rhyme with maz in mazda and anya, short As.
So Lars with the R pronounced sounds very little like laz

Not quite the same, but I have a Benjamin, and my eldest wanted the new baby to be named Holly. Had to be scrapped thanks to 'Ben and Holly' link...

Moominfan · 09/03/2018 18:58

I've known a micheal and Michelle before. No need to sound out

Aprilmightmemynewname · 09/03/2018 19:15

Exmil was called Gwendolyn and her dsis was Lynn.
