Winston

Me and dp had decided on Winston if our baby is a boy but my mum actually laughed because she thought I was joking. It was actually DP's granddads name but my Mum didn't actually know this as he died before DP and I met. We still love it and my Mum is desperately pretending to like it now too. Will it always be in the back of my mind that she hates it or will it all be okay if it's a real wee persons name?

Your DM will have to get used to it and work hard at not letting her disapproval shine through! Your baby, your name, use whatever you like best :)

flumpybear · 03/03/2018 08:11

It's a bit of a marmite name but don't worry, my mum hates my DDs name, though my mum isn't alive now but it's not affected how much I love my DD name

Lilonetwo · 03/03/2018 08:13

It's cute. But not a name I would choose. However you can always use the nickname Stan. Which is very cute Grin
Ignore your mum. My dad thought my DCs name was a joke when we announced it too!

I personally don't like it but your DM will have to get over her hate for it as it's your baby and your choice. To be honest I'd rather see a baby Winston than a baby Destiny-ray sunshine lollipop rainbow. So go for it especially as it's a family name

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/03/2018 10:29

Love it.

Winston is a great name - classic, strong, easy to spell and not too common/popular.

But more importantly, choose the name you love, not what your mother loves.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/03/2018 11:13

That's why it's never a good idea to reveal your intended baby names. Wink

It’s not a name I’d personally choose but there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a solid, known, name and it’s got a nice family connection. Popular in the Afro Carribbean community I believe.

You really shouldn’t discuss names with people aside from your partner before the baby arrives. People tend to give their opinions very freely Grin But at least your mum is now trying to be polite about it.

MikeUniformMike · 03/03/2018 13:34

I think it's a good choice. Your mum would probably prefer Darren or Wayne.

daisypond · 03/03/2018 13:46

It's fine. It's a name I associate with older people from the Caribbean too - but that's a generational as well as a regional thing. All these older names come around again and get refreshed - like Vincent, Victor, Clive - I know young people called these names again now.

It's too Churchill, and while at the moment many aren't aware of his negative side, I think awareness is rising and I'd hate to have saddled my child with a name with such associations.

I know a Winston. He's not Jamaican, and was born after the war. He's really nice so I like the name. Billie Piper and Laurence Fox have a son called Winston. When this was announced I thought it was a great name.

PositiveVibes18 · 03/03/2018 15:43

I would be like your mum and think you were joking however it's you and your DH choice and she will have to get used to it. I honestly wouldn't let it bother you as long as you love it.

scoutcat · 03/03/2018 15:48

My mum hated my sister's son's name (Jackson) but now he's here and three years old it suits him completely. Now she loves it.

stellarfox · 03/03/2018 17:16

Sometimes you don’t like a name until you meet someone with it so even if she’s pretending to like it now I’m sure she will love your son and it will grow on her! It is a great name. Its also our dog name (don’t let that put you off though!) but if it wasn’t I would consider using it too!
