Wilf as stand alone name.

Just that really. Does Wilf work as a stand alone name or does it sound ‘incomplete’ to you? I like Wilf but I’m going off Wilfred.

I bet if you were asking these people to their faces they wouldn't be as rude.

Isn't that sort of the point of the Baby Names board? To hear honest, rather than polite opinions?

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/03/2018 16:41

Surely there's a difference between honest and rude? OP didn't actually ask whether any of us liked it - she asked if it sounded incomplete.

PistFump · 02/03/2018 16:42

I don't care for it at all, sorry.

LoislovesStewie · 02/03/2018 16:46

I don't like Wilf or Wilfred ( sorry!) It reminds me of something unpleasant , again sorry. But in general I think giving short versions is not a good idea as the child has less choice in future.

Ilovemybaby91 · 02/03/2018 19:09

Yeah honest. As in... 'no I don't think Wilf sounds like a complete name I prefer Wilfred' or vice versa not...

It's totally dire. And Wilfred isn't really any better. It sounds like the name of a cartoon character. Just don't.

I find Wilf quite ugly and weak sounding

Can you actually imagine saying that to someone's face? Because I definitely wouldn't. It's just rude.

User278832 · 02/03/2018 19:20

OK we won’t go for Wilf on it’s own but we aren’t discounting Wilfred.
Yes some rude comments but that’s what MN can be like. I don’t mind if you don’t like it-I probably don’t like your children’s names either🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for helping with my decision.

^I agree

EasterRobin · 02/03/2018 19:26

I had the same "milf" thought as several PPs I'm afraid.

Willswife · 02/03/2018 19:26

I quite like blunt honesty/rudeness. It gives you the best idea about what family and friends are saying behind your back!

Agree with the majority about Wilf.

daisypond · 02/03/2018 19:39

Can you actually imagine saying that to someone's face? That's the whole point of the baby names board - you can find out what people will really be thinking about the name you think is fabulous.

Ilovemybaby91 · 02/03/2018 22:09

poster you're so right MN is so like that. Bitchy! I bet if it was dadsnet they would be much more chilled Grin

Movablefeast · 02/03/2018 22:22

Sorry definitely don't like Wilf

Isjaki · 02/03/2018 22:23

I think Wilf sounds weak too. Maybe it's because it ends in an f it just 'ffffffs away into nothing.

Isjaki · 02/03/2018 22:25

But then I don't 'get' names like Bert, Fred, and Reg. They're just ugly old man names to me.

chezmk1988 · 03/03/2018 11:33

Sounds incomplete to me. Wilfred with wilf as nn is better imo

LoislovesStewie · 03/03/2018 12:01

I agree with the comment 're old men`s names! Again sorry, but I even prefer John or something like that. FWIW my dear late dad had quite an unusual name and as much as I love him I just couldn't saddle any child of mine with it. In fact he didn't use the name, people didn't know the name he used wasn't his real name!

yantan · 03/03/2018 12:47

I think Wilf sounds like a name in it's own right. I like it a lot.

2anddone · 03/03/2018 12:51

I like it (wouldn’t call my own child it though!!) The Unmumsy Mum has just called her third child Wilf so I am expecting a few more to follow!!
