How would you say Ceri? And would you know how to spell it?

Considering this as a girl's name, but worried that it'll be constantly mis-spelt/mispronounced (we don't live in Wales). Thoughts, please?

I worked with a male Ceri. His specialist field was shagging as many women as he could who weren't his wife.

CeriBerry · 28/02/2018 00:57

PuppyMonkey interesting you should say that, I think I’ve encountered more people reading it as ‘Serry’ since the rise of Game of Thrones and wondered if it was connected to Cersei!

OP, I really love my name. The odd Serry/Cherry doesn’t put me off it.

FizzyGreenWater · 28/02/2018 09:46

Kerry of course.

I wouldn't worry even about living in a place where most people would go for Cherry/Seri. It's such a simple name that it only takes saying it once to correct. And Kerry is such a familiar normal name that there would be no problems on introduction, they'd assume spelling would be Kerry but as soon as it's written down - again no problem. It's pretty simple.

FizzyGreenWater · 28/02/2018 09:47

Oh and yes I know male and female ones - and somehow it suits both equally. A true unisex name in Wales.

@Bimbler

I wonder if he's my ex Grin

Appuskidu · 28/02/2018 09:50

I would pronounce it Kerry and would spell it like that if I heard it said, too. Ceri is sweet but unless you live in Wales, I think there will be a lifetime of correcting other people by the poor child.

Sarah and Sara is an odd one. I would pronounce them differently and don’t get why eg Sara Cox says it’s Sarah??!

BeverlyHillsBillie · 28/02/2018 09:51

It's the Welsh version of Kerry I think. I'd pronounce it the same.

BeverlyHillsBillie · 28/02/2018 09:54

Probably because her mother decided she wanted a more unusual spelling for Sarah, causing poor Sara a lifetime of grief explaining that she's a Sarah not a Sara.

She calls herself Sarah because that's how her parents always said it. So that's her name. It's just spelt wrongly.

daisypond · 28/02/2018 10:06

I'd say Kerry if I saw it written as Ceri, because it's like names like Cerys/Carys, etc. I'm in the southeast. But if I just heard it, I'd assume it was spelled Kerry as my first thought.

Bimbler · 28/02/2018 10:57

Every American Sara I've met (I've met a lot of them) pronounced their name as Sarah, so I don't buy that it's an incorrect spelling.

flowery · 28/02/2018 11:04

I know a couple of Sara's, both pronounce it Sarah.

I would pronounce Ceri like Kerry because I used to know someone with the name.

Sadmum23 · 28/02/2018 11:06

My daughter is a Keri , but usually gets spelt Kerry or Kerri. If l was to write the name l would check spelling

BeverlyHillsBillie · 28/02/2018 11:07

Maybe that's an accent /pronunciation thing though. Lots of words with an a in are pronounced that way in America.

Bath, grant, can't etc.

flowery · 28/02/2018 11:31

"Maybe that's an accent /pronunciation thing though. Lots of words with an a in are pronounced that way in America."

"Bath, grant, can't etc"

I, and the Sara's I know who pronounce it Sarah, are in SE England, where bath, grant, can't all rhyme with bar and car.

CatsForgotPassword · 28/02/2018 11:45

Kerry.

I’d see Ceri and know how to say it, but if I heard “Ceri” I’d probably spell it Kerry. If she said Ceri with a C I’d know exactly how to spell it.

Bimbler · 28/02/2018 11:57

Nope.

DreamingOfAHotBeach · 28/02/2018 14:00

It's said as Kerry. I would stick with the more common spelling, Kerry.

Pemba · 01/03/2018 00:20

But Ceri is a different name, I think it's a different origin to Kerry, it's just a coincidence that they sound the same. Ceri is a Welsh name and looks much nicer written down than Kerry. I'm surprised more of you don't seem to have heard of it.

CircleofWillis · 01/03/2018 12:23

I’ve seen the name but never heard it pronounced so have always read it as “Cherry”.

UsernameInvalid66 · 01/03/2018 14:20

I'm not American and I'd never met anybody who
didn't pronounce Sara the same as Sarah until I was about 30. I thought they were just different spellings of the same thing, like Clare/Claire. Maybe which way people pronounce Sara is regional.

For what it's worth, I knew that Ceri is pronounced like Kerry.

SingaSong12 · 01/03/2018 14:25

I've never heard or seen the name before. I wouldn't know if it was a boy or girl. Before I read the thread I I would have wavered between pronouncing it Seri or Kerry and would have plumped for Seri.

SingaSong12 · 01/03/2018 14:28

If someone told me their name was Kerry (and pronounced rhyme with Ferry) my instinct would be to spell as Kerry.

VanessaBet · 01/03/2018 14:34

I'm from Wales so know it's pronounced Kerry. I can kind of see where people are getting Serri from - but how do you get Cherry? Is c a CH sound in Ireland or something?

squoosh · 01/03/2018 14:36

Cello has a ch sound so maybe that's where they get the idea of cherry.

VanessaBet · 01/03/2018 15:41

Aah yes, good thinking squoosh. So Italian type pronunciation then.
