Freya

Is Freya super popular now? I like it, plus I like the fact that she was a Norse goddess. But I don't want her to be one of five Freyas in her class! Any thoughts (or alternative mythological baby girl names...?) 😀

It is quote popular!

But I love mythological names.. Some of the following are!

Athena/Anthea/Althea (all quite similar)
Astraea
Clio
Ianthe
Iris
Isis (unfortunately now a tarnished name)
Juno
Pandora (nn ideas Panda/Nora)
Penelope
Phaedra (pronounced Fay-dra)
Theia
Xanthe

Yes it is extremely popular. If you do really like it though and it's meaningful to you. I wouldn't let popularity put you off. There are plenty of people who don't give a jot about popularity.
Other ideas, though.
Delia. Athena. Iris. Niamh. Luna. Penelope. Isolde. Clio. Helen. Ariadne.

I love it. It’s popular, but not super popular. I’ve only met a couple in the 15 years I’ve been a mum and they aren’t even in the same school, never mind class.

Goldrill · 26/02/2018 18:50

We have a seven year old Freya and she's the only one in her school.

The only time I've really encountered other Freyas has been in the play areas at national trust spots!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/02/2018 18:56

Alena. Aurora. Helena. Calliope..

chipsandgin · 26/02/2018 18:58

I know four at the moment - three babies and a five year old.

It was number 13 last year in the UK & if you look at this chart you can see it has been really popular since 2010, so you'd have a school full.

It is still a pretty name, but as someone with one of the most popular names of my era I would say you have to get used to the idea she'll be Freya 'your surname initial' along with Freya B and Freya W in her class. I'm still "'my name' B" to some of my old school friends!

displacementofwater · 26/02/2018 19:04

It's similar to my maiden name and I used to get the piss taken out of me at school because of it. For that reason, I absolutely hate it and can't think why anyone would inflict it on a child. Probably not very helpful, sorry! Smile

Lorddenning1 · 26/02/2018 20:35

Thea is nice

Madmarchpear · 26/02/2018 20:44

All the Freyas that I know are a bit posh and lovely girls. I really like it but it can seem a bit off on petite dark haired girls. For me it has strong aryan and scandi associations so I couldn't consider it for my dd who was destined to be brunette.

IrisApfelRocks · 27/02/2018 13:04

It's very popular at the moment. I always loved the name and when I was expecting my first daughter she just had to be Freya. I still absolutely love it, even tho there is always at least one other Freya in the playground, but maybe that's just where we live. Her sister is Iris. Sticking to the goddesses theme, Greek goddess of the rainbow

caoraich · 27/02/2018 13:08

I think it's lovely. I did call my cat Freya, but that's because I like to call my pets human-names, and Norse Freyja also rode a chariot pulled along by cats Grin
Love names that have stories/facts with them- e.g. all the fun mythological/goddess names!

MiniDoofa · 27/02/2018 13:23

We have a Freya. Still love the name. I've met two others ever. And she's the only one in her school.
😀

halcyondays · 27/02/2018 13:25

I can't remember if I've met any Freyas, it's definitely not super popular around here.

omBreROSE · 27/02/2018 13:31

Very popular here.
South West. In several classes.

Yogagirl123 · 27/02/2018 13:35

Lovely name, I only know one Freya.

17caterpillars1mouse · 27/02/2018 13:56

My DH loves it but here (midlands) you can't go to the park without coming across at least 2

FreeNiki · 27/02/2018 13:58

It's not as popular as Sophie, Isabelle, etc.

I love it.

Just do it!

DreamingOfAHotBeach · 27/02/2018 14:06

It's extremely popular.

I don't like it at all. There are much nicer (IMO) mythological names as posters have suggested.

Glumglowworm · 27/02/2018 19:37

It’s nice, I know loads of girls aged between 7 and 14 because I’m a Brownie and Guide leader, but I only know 2 Freya’s

TurquoiseDress · 27/02/2018 19:41

I used to love the name Freya when I was at school- at my primary school (in the late 80s) there was a half Danish girl called Freya, it seemed to me such an unusual and beautiful name.

Still beautiful but I think much more popular- although I don't know of any little ones called Freya, at the moment.

NebularNerd · 28/02/2018 13:22

Thanks for replies. My first daughter is Maia & I'm not sure they sound good together - too samey? I'm also considering Juno, but not sure I'm brave enough - any thoughts? 😀

OP posts:
daisypond · 28/02/2018 13:39

I think Maia and Freya sound odd together, yes. I wasn't keen on Juno initially but it's better than Freya and I think I could definitely come round to it.

Belfastbird · 28/02/2018 13:44

I have an 8yr old freya. 3 in her year. (2 class intake). I still love it but it's now more popular than I'd like!
