Name meanings

When naming our DC the meaning of the names were an important factor in whether we liked the names and am really suprised by the amount of people who don't even know the meaning of their kids names or named their kids names knowing they have unattractive meanings.

Do you know what the meaning of your DC's name is? And would you be put of by a name with an unfortunate meaning or name then that anyway if you liked the name?

Yes but even if it meant gobshite I’d still have used it as DS is named after my late father.

NameChangeDestroyer · 23/02/2018 20:57

I know the meaning of my dd's name. It wasn't something I was hugely interested in. I absolutely love the name Claudia. It means lame (and is always mentioned on here if anyone asks for opinions on it) but I'd still use it if dp would agree.

When choosing names I was more concerned that I hadn't chosen a combination of first and surname that is unsavoury, something like Rose West for example would be awful.

pipilangstrumpf · 23/02/2018 21:05

Some names have more obvious meanings than others.

SuperBeagle · 23/02/2018 21:52

I wouldn't choose a name with a negative meaning (i.e. Claudia, which means lame, or Cecilia, which means blind, or Delilah, which means weak or languishing). I also wouldn't choose a name that had a negative connotation, even if the meaning was alright (i.e. Jezebel, Delilah again, Lolita etc).

Mine are Samuel (name of God or God has heard), Frederick (peaceful ruler), Emilia (rival) and Lily (the flower or a diminutive of Elizabeth, meaning my God is an oath). No pervasive negative connotations with any of them either.

I am ageist so was slightly put off by names that had ‘god’ in their meaning but not enough that it would have stopped me if I had loved the name.
I know the meaning of dds name but it wasn’t a big thing in my choice of name.

My name has a slightly odd meaning but it has never bothered me and I don’t think most people would even consider it. It is generally just considered to be a classic name.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 23/02/2018 21:58

Atheist! Athiest! I am not ageist. I quite like the elderly as a general rule. Blush

dantdmistedious · 23/02/2018 22:03

I do but only after I named them.

upsideup · 23/02/2018 22:08

@SuperBeagle

My youngest is Emmi and when naming her we were worried that 'rival' could be considered as a negative thing, already she is extremely competitive and driven which we now see as positive.

A lot of names don't actually have a meaning, and baby name sites just make them up/try to read meanings back into the names. My name, depending where you look, means 'horse-serpent' or 'fair as a rose'. It doesn't actually mean either. It's just a name.

bridgetreilly · 23/02/2018 22:48

Which is to say, if name actually does mean something, I'd want it to be something nice rather than negative, but I'd do my own research to see whether it really does have a meaning. And I'd be totally okay with a name that's just a name.

tinytoucan · 23/02/2018 22:59

I know the meaning of my son’s name, but it wasn’t something I looked into before choosing it. I didn’t look at the meanings of all the different name options we considered.

Despite that, I really do love the name Claudia but think I would have second thoughts about using it. This is only because when I was growing up I used to love getting key rings and things with my name meaning on, and it would seem sad to me that hers would all say ‘lame’ (not that we’re even having another one yet!!)

LadyPug · 24/02/2018 07:41

Name meanings are important to me and if I don’t like the meaning I will rule out the name. But then, I name things for a living!

Fekko · 24/02/2018 08:05

Oooo tell us more pug! How do you get a job like that?

This paint is ‘pimple puss yellow’, ‘zombie puke green’. Do I get the job?

LadyPug · 24/02/2018 08:07

Hehe well no I’m just a commercial writer really but I’m mainly hired to name products or companies.

MikeUniformMike · 24/02/2018 14:05

What names do your DC have LadyPug? Did you create the names or go for safe or classic?

LadyPug · 24/02/2018 23:42

Not classic but not crazy either (although if I say then it will out me so obvious enough! Haha!) I do like a mixture of names though but the meaning is important

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2018 23:46

I know the meaning of my DCs' names because I've always had an interest in names & their origins.

One of my DC has a name that was chosen specifically for its meaning.

Ontopofthesunset · 24/02/2018 23:52

As I've said before, to me it depends whether the name actually means something in English or just has a meaning in the language it's derived from. Claudia doesn't mean lame in English - it just doesn't. It doesn't even mean lame in modern Italian. So what if it's derived from a language no one speaks and once meant that? I say that as a student of Latin and various foreign languages and as someone who also names things for a living.

Harry, for instance, means something in English. So does Frank. So does Rose. So does Grace. Edward doesn't, even if it originally meant 'noble conqueror' or something.

MikeUniformMike · 25/02/2018 09:43

Why the obsession with Claudia? Why pick on her?

Fekko · 25/02/2018 11:16

I had a snotty Claudia in my year at school. Meant ‘snotty ratbag’ in my book!

upsideup · 25/02/2018 21:55

None of my children have traditional names that strictly actually mean something but still if they searched their names online or looked them up in a book there will be a meaning and I just wouldnt want it to be bad. I think I would be upset if I was a child called claudia and all my friends were looking up what their names meant and I saw mine meant lame.
