What are your thoughts. I like both but think i prefer Tristram. My mum thinks it's awful though, it is really that bad? Do you know any Tristram's or Tristan's?

I knew one Tristram.

I thought his name was Tristan and he just spoke funny. Blush

CotswoldStrife · 23/02/2018 16:42

There will be a few people who have come across Tristram as it is the name of a character in a previous A level text (The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy). The book is not an easy read, tbh, and may influence opinion on the name!

Cosmoa · 23/02/2018 18:03

Tristam just looks like a typo.. Like someobe misheard the n for an m..

I know it's a name in it's own right but I still feel like it's because someone spelt Tristan wrong once 😂

mondler · 23/02/2018 18:07

I've never heard of Tristram and its making me think of trams! But if you like it go for it.

I've known a couple of Tristan's and like it as a name.

Starryskiesinthesky · 23/02/2018 18:11

Both sound really wet to me.

mrsfuzzyboots · 23/02/2018 18:12

Makes me think of Tristram Shandy and the whole point there is that Tristram isn’t a real name. However it’s from the 18th century and these days there are far stranger names out there than Tristram... Plus it’s a great tribute to a great novel. Personally I do prefer Tristran but if you like it then go for it!!

OllyBJolly · 23/02/2018 18:15

Has Tristram Hunt been forgotten about already?! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tristram_Hunt

Very posh but likeable.

mrsfuzzyboots · 23/02/2018 18:16

Cosmoa you’re actually right Grin - it’s from an 18th century novel, where the father of the title character wants to call him Trismegistus but the mother and the curate get it confused with Tristan and he ends up being christened Tristram and consequently is condemned to a life of woe!

PanannyPanoo · 23/02/2018 19:09

I know one of each. worked with them as children they would be in their 20's now.
Both lovely boys from wealthy families. Like all unusual names you only need to know one for it to stop feeling unusual.
I think Tristan is easier to say.

SuperBeagle · 23/02/2018 20:10

Tristram is awful. It's so difficult and clunky to say. It ends up coming out like "tris-drum".

Tristan is marginally better, but still not fantastic. It also doesn't have posh connotations here; if anything, the opposite.

bridgetreilly · 23/02/2018 22:59

I like Tristan better, not least because, as others have said, Tristram is quite hard to say.

dingdongdigeridoo · 23/02/2018 23:02

Tristan is very posh in my mind. It’s like Tarquin or Rupert. Not bad, just posh.

ThankYouGillian · 23/02/2018 23:24

I prefer Tristan. How about Christian? Similar sound.....

starkid · 24/02/2018 09:20

Love Tristan, but Tristram is just a struggle and also looks a bit messy

C0untDucku1a · 24/02/2018 09:22

Is Tristmegistus in the running?

Backingvocals · 24/02/2018 09:25

Oh thank god. I thought this was for twins ShockGrin

CatsForgotPassword · 24/02/2018 11:40

Tristan is fine. I have a family member with this name. I can’t say Tristram

Upsidedownandinsideout · 24/02/2018 11:43

My friends DH is called Tristram, we also all thought he was called Tristan but had a speech impediment. It looks nice but sounds tricky and he'd forever be correcting people (or being nice and letting it slide for ages like friend's DH!)

shetookshelter · 24/02/2018 11:53

I kind of hate them both. But Tristan is better than Tristram I suppose.

gingergenius · 24/02/2018 12:03

You could always ditch both and go for Vulcan? I hear that name's very much up and coming? Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 24/02/2018 12:05

Not keen sorry OP.

How about:
Titus
Theodore (THEO)
Tobias (Toby)

PaperdollCartoon · 24/02/2018 12:11

Tristram Hunt is lovely.

But I prefer Tristan. I have a pretty —posh— well-spoken voice, the kind that’s meant to sound fine with names like Tristram, and I still find it really hard to say, doesn’t flow well. Tristan wouldn’t be my first choice but it’s nice and underused, won’t be 7 of them in his class.

PaperdollCartoon · 24/02/2018 12:13

Strikethrough fail

PinkAvocado · 24/02/2018 12:13

I know a couple of Tristrans and I like it. Tristram is pretty awful when I say it-it comes out as an utter mess.

MikeUniformMike · 24/02/2018 13:49

Tristram is much better than Tristan. Tristan is a sad name.
Tristram Hunt.
