Haley or Halley?

Premature thread considering me and my fiance are still TTC (still dreading to take a pregnancy test!) We are still very excited to be trying and we are talking about baby names. We have decided on a boys name, but we both like Haley or Halley for a girl. We would really love some opinions on which name you prefer of the two :)

I know a Haille (pronounced like Hayley) she’s lovely and I think it’s a pretty looking spelling too.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 21/02/2018 07:18

Haley is the correct spelling for "Hay-lee" in the US. I know quite a few spread over several states. I also know one here in the U.K. whose parents are from the US originally.

I also like the spelling Haley, but if I'm honest, if you're in the UK with no intention of leaving, I would go for Hayley as that's how everyone will spell it anyway.

I personally love Halle but I wouldn't add the "y" - it confuses things and I think looks a little clunky.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 21/02/2018 07:20

(And yes, I know the comet is spelled "Halley" but as a girl's first name Halle is much more recognisable)

NC1990 · 21/02/2018 08:35

*Nothing at all wrong with Hayley, I just think Haley looks more "neat"?. Hailey looks nicer though

only one of those is an actual spelling of the name hmm*

Haley, Hailey and Hayley are all perfectly acceptable spellings Hmm Hayley seems the more common spelling in the UK so might make your life easier to go for that one.

I had a Labrador called Hallie...

coconutlimesmoosh · 21/02/2018 08:58

Not of the same name they are not.

Spam88 · 21/02/2018 09:04

I like both names but don't like either spelling. I always thought Haley was the male spelling.

Lightheartedindeed · 21/02/2018 09:07

I have a Halle (rhymes with Sally) had so many compliments over the years

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/02/2018 09:23

Out of the two i'd choose Haley but i prefer Hallie. It's a nice name

HuskyMcClusky · 21/02/2018 09:28

I would choose Halle (pronounced ‘hally’)

Hayley is very 80s. Don’t like the Haley spelling.

Really like the name Hayley. Was really popular when I was at school so know a few in their 30s now. Not sure how popular it is now but prefer it to Hallie/Halle

BrizzleMaverick · 21/02/2018 11:08

Have to say as a Hayley myself I've encountered many spelling over the years with my spelling the most common.

I like Halle (as in Berry) also but if you went with Hayley/Haley/hailie/haylie/hayleigh (told you I have had lots) then just be prepared for people to get it wrong from time to time.

I was named after the comet but my parents went with Hayley rather than Halley.

bridgetreilly · 21/02/2018 11:20

Halley's comet is pronounced Hay-ley. So the two names would actually sound the same.

halcyondays · 21/02/2018 11:24

Hayley or Hailie, so everyone knows how to pronounce it?

Isn't there a lot of debate on how you say Halley's comet?

HuskyMcClusky · 21/02/2018 11:34

I think Halley’s Comet is pronounced ‘hally’, not ‘hayley’. Because that’s how Edmund Halley’s name was pronounced.

MammieBear · 21/02/2018 12:17

I'd go for commet spelling as that is a lovely connection to the name.

NC1990 · 21/02/2018 14:51

coconut they are all pronounced the same way?

coconutlimesmoosh · 21/02/2018 14:54

nope

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 21/02/2018 14:59

coconut - I can assure you that Haley and Hayley are pronounced exactly the same and are different spellings of the same name. Hailey isn't one I've personally come across but it makes perfect sense that it is also pronounced the same way. Several people on this thread have indicated that these are all legitimate spellings of the same name, yet you are adamant that they aren't. How would you pronounce them all then? I'll be sure to tell my friends they've all been pronouncing their own names wrong for the last 30+ years

RavenWings · 21/02/2018 19:29

I would spell Haley as Hayley or Hailey myself. Halley is nicer I think, but again Halle would be my choice of spelling.

AlyTab · 22/02/2018 15:49

I'm loving Hailey I have to say. I do agree, Hayley and Hailey are pronounced the same. Halley, Halle and Hallie are pronounced the same also and a different name.

I mean Hailey and Halley and their alternate spellings are different names respectively.
