We’re finding it hard to come up with a boys name. Front runner is Huw/Hugh (hubby half welsh but we live in England). Then Frederick as middle name after my grandad. Trying to find something below top 50 names past few years ideally. Other options are:

Arthur
Griff
Freddie/Frederick as first name
Ari
Albert/Albie
Heath
Leonard/Lennie
Rupert

But hubby doesn’t like a fair few of them.
Main concern is whenever I tell anyone we’re thinking of Huw, I never get a ‘oooh that’s lovely’ kind of response 😬!

Go on - don't leave me hanging!

Any other names that seem similar to my list that anyone would reccommend? Not sure how names would be classed as similar, but maybe people who like Huw what other names do you also like?

HelloBrass - I can’t help but hear it as ‘Half a’ (to be followed up by some joker in an old school TV sketch with ‘what did he do with the other half?’ or something similarly daft). Very silly I know!

Absolutely love Huw! Perfect choice and a lovely nod to the Wedlsh family. If not then I also really like Griff and Arthur. (But stick with HuwSmile).

My 17 dd has a friend in her year at school called Hugh and he is lovely. I think his parents are Irish.

Love Huw. Hate Freddie but love Frederick. My dad was Frederick Charles. He used to get called Fred which I prefer to Freddie

Huw is lovely, with a lovely nod to the Welsh heritage - my DP is also Welsh, so DS is half Welsh living in England. While we didn't go for a Welsh name eventually, a couple got tossed around.

I really, really like Gruff myself, but wouldn't be able to bring myself to spell it Griff, ans would have to have Gruffydd on the BC which I appreciate can be confusing outside of Wales. This is probably a large reason why it's had to come off my shortlist for future DSs...

David/Dafydd is nice, though Dafydd might be a bit "too" Welsh for England.

Dylan (think Dylan Thomas) is lovely too.

I went to university (in Wales) with several Rhydians, which I quite like.

I'd stop discussing names with family and friends before baby's here tbh, you're more likely to have negative feedback before you have an adorable little baby Huw the name is attached to.

Love it. Huw Frederick is lovely, and a nice nod to Welsh roots....however the child will have to constantly say "My name's Huw...no, spelt H.U.W not H.U.G.H, that could be annoying for him.

I have a Hugh so love it obviously (went with this spelling as no Welsh connections) - it's an underused classic, both strong and gentle sounding Smile Huw/Hugh Frederick sounds perfect to me.

I have a 6 month old Hugh, it was on our shortlist but not front runner. I love it and it's grown on me over the months. Haven't met another baby Hugh yet

I like Ari. Can it be lengthened to anything though and Ari used for short?

I really like Huw it's cute and Albert/Albie. I know about a million Freddie's so wouldn't go for that.

I also love Huw

What about Evan as a Welsh name?

From your list I like Albert

Freddie is incredibly popular round my way

I don't like Leonard, and I really dislike Rupert and Heath

Your list is quite eclectic - so it's hard to find a 'theme'

Asa

My Grandad was Albert/Albie and I adore this name Smile

I know a few adults named Huw. I prefer the Welsh spelling.

Also like Griff(in) 🙂

Do not like Albert as I don't like Albie and I know about 10 under 5yo with the name!

My best male friend since my teens is Heath. Love it- BUT - people keep calling him Keith!

I love Huw spelt the Welsh way, really suitable for both a child and an adult. I'd definitely go with it.

He will not mind having to spell New. It's fine having a name that has to be spelt out. I have an unusual name and wanted a 'blend in' name as a child but really love my name as I've got older. I have to correct people sometimes who take it to be a slightly longer different name. But that's ok.

Love Huw or Hugh. Griff is great too. How about Hywel/Huwel?

I know a young Huw - his brother is Wyn, in case that also appeals.

15th most popular doesn't equate to two per class list. There isn't a name ubiquitous as Steve/David and Claire/Sarah were when I was school. Assuming a mixed school 30 per class would mean roughly 15 boys (my son is in a boy heavy year and there are 18 boys in his class). Any name could be repeated (the only repeated name in my son's class was 50 something on the list the year they were born.) Choose a name you love, make sure the initials don't spell something rude and it's not the name of a serial killer and go for it. You can't control what other children will have that name. A friend chose something fairly unusual and practically unheard of for her November born then it was used in a popular TV show weeks later and shot up in popularity so hers was one on several in the year at nursery.

Hugh is great, I was very tempted to go for that. Depends where you live but you can't move for Alberts round here, it's getting silly.

I'm Welsh and I love Huw. I was on my list for my dd but my dh veto'd it.

I've never met an awful Huw.

Near me in the South West I can't move for Freddie's, Alfie's and Jayden's.
