Harriet or Hannah

Baby #3 is due in a few weeks and we're sorted for a boy's name. Our surname is one syllable.

DD1 has the same name as Prince George's sister and DD2 is the Roman goddess of flowers and spring.

If we have a third DD, which do you prefer: Harriet or Hannah?

There seems to be quite a lot of love for Hannah here 🙂

I think Harriet goes better with your other DDs names. Hannah is nice though.

DontbeaDickaboutit · 10/02/2018 19:21

Hannah, definitely! I just love it!

Out of interest, why didn't you just write Charlotte and Flora in your OP? I understand posters wanting to remain anonymous but you just told us what your daughters were called anyway?!

PastramiAndRye · 10/02/2018 19:23

It makes posts less searchable.

Dontbea
Probably because the OP wouldn't want the thread to pop up if somone were to goolge her daughter's names...?

but other sites would probably come up sooner / this doesn't seem like an incredibly likely scenario.

MrsHoneyMummy · 10/02/2018 19:31

Hannah if you're not fussed about the number of other girls who have the same name.
We have a family member called Hannah with a single syllable surname.

I liked the suggestion someone else made for Anna rather than Hannah.

I'm not overly fond of Harriet but i only know two as opposed to dozens (literally) of Hannahs.

DontbeaDickaboutit · 10/02/2018 19:32

Ah ok, cool - was a genuine question, didn't know people searched threads like that..

DontbeaDickaboutit · 10/02/2018 19:33

MrsHoney, that's so interesting, my sister is called Hannah (38) but I've never met a child one!

PastramiAndRye · 10/02/2018 19:35

That's funny, MrsH. I don't know single Hannah under the age of 25ish. I also don't know any other Charlottes but there's another Flora in DD2's playgroup class of ~15 children.

I like Harriet better

floriad · 10/02/2018 19:41

Harriet is currently ranked 49 and seems to be rising in popularity, Hannah is ranked 57.

MrsHoneyMummy · 10/02/2018 20:06

looks like I'm showing my age! "our" Hannah is 20, and most of the others i know are 15-25.
Hannah was number 13 in 2005, 15 in 2006, 16 in 2007, 19 in 2008, 29 in 2009, 31 in 2010.... so yes, it is going out of fashion.

A friend advised against choosing a name that was going out of fashion because it would "age" the person as they got older.... for example a woman called Joan, Ethel or Doris is usually over 70, so if you met one who was 55 you might initially assume they were older than they really were.

But having said that I still prefer Hannah to Harriet.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/02/2018 20:09

Harriet.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 10/02/2018 20:11

Harriet is one of my favourites if we have another girl

franktheskank · 10/02/2018 20:18

Both are boring and prissy.

PastramiAndRye · 10/02/2018 20:24

I guess I wouldn't class Joan and Doris as being classic names, whereas as Hannah is biblical so probably won't date in the same way. I see Harriet as being classic in a similar vein to Susannah, Eliza or Helena.

PastramiAndRye · 10/02/2018 20:27

Pleasant, frank, thanks for that.

Harriet goes better with your ‘set’.

And Hattie, Lottie and Floss(?) are lovely nicknames but you may recoil in horror at the thought of that!

In which case choose Hannah!

madeyemoodysmum · 10/02/2018 22:19

My niece is hannah and she is the only one in her year group (yr7). 2 in whole school. It's not as popular as it was 15 years ago

I love it btw.

MikeUniformMike · 11/02/2018 18:52

I prefer Hannah, but Harriet seems to go with the other names. I'd choose Hannah.

Mossbystrand · 11/02/2018 19:16

I've known 2 Harriets in my life and they were both scheming little madams so I'm going with Hannah.

SuperBeagle · 11/02/2018 19:47

Hannah is a beautiful name.

I'm not a fan of Harriet at all.

Lennythelion14 · 12/02/2018 07:10

Harriet. Its lovely.

blinkineckmum · 12/02/2018 07:12

Hannah

Isitwinteryet · 12/02/2018 09:06

Harriet 100%. I have a Harriet! :)
