OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Cheekyandfreaky · 09/02/2018 17:45

Love it, and love dot as a nn.

BellMcEnd · 09/02/2018 17:47

Love it. I only know one (in her 40s) and at the risk of sounding a bit schmaltzy she’s bloody amazing. She’s kind, generous, warm and one of the nicest people I know. She often gets called Dottie.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 09/02/2018 17:49

I went to uni with one. It's distinctly old-fashioned but a young woman can definitely work it. She went by Dolly or Dot for short.

Godsplan · 09/02/2018 17:50

Don’t like it at all sorry

AdaColeman · 09/02/2018 17:51

I think Dorothea is prettier.

NotAnotherEmma · 09/02/2018 17:51

Dorothy is nice, so is Dotty

Meemzinha · 09/02/2018 18:11

Nope.. Just not into this going back to old names malarkey!

I find it weird that people have the same names... I wish in general people were more creative with their names as children are one of a kind! So going back to old names is like.. ugh reeeeallly?!

pilates · 09/02/2018 18:18

Awful, sorry

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 09/02/2018 18:20

I lik it and love Dottie but I too only know one and she hates her name. She’s always told me that as a girl she tried regularly to get her DM to change her name.

wendywhite · 09/02/2018 18:49

My Nana’s name,
She hated it.
Was always called Dot.
I like it.

I’m afraid the name always makes me laugh. In Victorian times, being “a friend of Dorothy” was a euphemism for being gay. It’s played on in “The Importance of being Earnest” (Ernest was also a gay euphemism). Oscar Wilde has a field day with the subtext in his play!

Justanewname · 10/02/2018 08:39

Actually the friend of Dorothy reference is one of the reasons I like the name. It’s one of my favouritist old fashioned euphemisms for being gay. And as a gay myself I hope I am a friend as well as as a mama to my little Dorothy.

BrutusMcDogface · 10/02/2018 08:41

Dear god, no! I think that's a very strange reason for wanting to name a child Dorothy!

I have an auntie Dorothy who I love but have never met another one, besides Dot Cotton.

StilettosAreANoNo · 10/02/2018 08:42

Not keen tbh. It’s the diminutives I esp don’t like ie Dot/tie, Dolly etc.

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2018 08:55

Honestly, I think it's pretty awful.

It's very outdated, IMO. And I think "Dotty" is grim too; it means "not quite there mentally" where I'm from. Like someone's missing a few cogs upstairs.

Mammatron · 10/02/2018 08:58

I love it!

FizzyGreenWater · 10/02/2018 19:25

Lovely. Love Dolly as a short form. Knew an old lady from parents' church who was known as Dotkin! Love it.

FizzyGreenWater · 10/02/2018 19:29

Why all the silliness about 'Dottie'?

'Bob' also means to float about with little control - do people wring their hands in horror every time the mother of a Robert feels a short form coming on?

Bill? Don't do it! They'll think he's a receipt!
Lou? Noooo!!! They'll call her a toilet!
Flo? How could you!
Tom? What, like the drum?

Thistlebelle · 10/02/2018 19:36

I think Dorothy is a lovely name, Dory is a nice nickname as an alternative to Dot.

Meem you think people having the same name is “weird”?

That’s quite an odd view. There are 7.6 Billion people on earth - you think they should all have a different name? HmmConfusedGrin

scrabbler3 · 10/02/2018 21:19

Oh wow. I've learnt something new. I thought Friend of Dorothy was a Wizard of Oz ref. Ha!

I like the name. Cool nicknames too.

Tweetypie88 · 10/02/2018 21:21

I really wanted DD to be called Dotty but partner wasn't keen! I love it

ICanStandtheHeat · 10/02/2018 21:54

Love it!!!

MadisonAvenue · 10/02/2018 22:15

scrabbler so did I.
I assumed it was because Judy Garland was a gay icon.

Snowbelled · 10/02/2018 22:20

Baddoc kids nowadays don't give a fuck about euphemisms for being gay.
