There are a lot of both to be honest. My DS is one of three Jameses in his class...
But we chose it because it’s quite timeless and classless and you can modify it to suit whoever he becomes (I think a Jim is a different type of person to a Jamie and different again to a Jimmie....)

Another vote for James, it's really lovely name.

As far as popularity, I know 3 boys called Jack who are 2 or under and 1 James who is 5, so here Jack is more popular than James.

ScarlettDarling · 07/02/2018 12:37

Gosh I'm so surprised that the majority are saying James. I much prefer Jack! Jack sounds like a name of a handsome, rugged man. James sounds like a limp lettuce leaf to me.

BusterGonad · 07/02/2018 12:41

No, I mean just James. 😂 sorry to confuse you but now you mention it James Jack does sound nice!

Sophronia · 07/02/2018 13:15

James

James.

I have one and we rarely come across other ones despite being in Scotland. There were no others in his primary school!

James a limp lettuce leaf? Goodness me no.

James. You can use Jack as a nn for James, although Jack was traditionally a nn for John. The french name Jacques is their version of James.

IVflytrap · 07/02/2018 17:02

James. I do like Jack, but I think it's a bit more faddy and will seem dated in a couple of decades. James is more timeless, and slightly less popular.

If you are looking for nicknames, Jake would be acceptable, as the name Jacob comes from the same name as James originally. Of course there's also Jamie and Jay.

Valerrie · 07/02/2018 17:07

I've never taught a James, ever. It seems weird now I think about it!

However, I've lost count at how many Jacks I've taught.

MollyHuaCha · 07/02/2018 18:54

James.

leghoul · 07/02/2018 18:58

James
I only know one James in a primary school of 400 or so! It's a classic

bluebabydinosaur · 08/02/2018 09:10

Thank you all, thats really interesting. Im really surprised by how many of you prefer James. I thought it would be a 50/50 split.

I love the name James, but worry a little about the shortening/nicknames to Jim/Jimmy, which I'm not so keen on.

NutElla5x · 08/02/2018 09:21

Funny because I don't know any Jack's but quite a few James'.I do prefer James to Jack though, even if it is my twat of an ex-husbands name :)

ReelingLush18 · 08/02/2018 09:25

Stringofpearls actually you have a point there. James is a fab name but Jim/Jimmy much less so. Although of course there's no need to diminutise.

pipilangstrumpf · 08/02/2018 10:47

Jack is SO overused!

On that basis I'll choose James.
