Ronald?

A lot of what ifs in this thread, but I'm due baby number 2 in September, we found our name shortlist from when we had dd. We were loosely discussing names last night, last time around we avoided all family names to avoid arguments or upset.

But my lovely grandad died when dd was 2 weeks old. He meant so much to me and I'd really like to use his name if we have a boy as he will be the only one of my grandparents not to meet this little one. His name was Ronald, but is Ronald too dated? The other option is to use it as a middle name which I also don't mind.

But apart from Ronnie (which I'm not keen on) there isn't much you can do with Ronald is there?! What is everyone's opinion on it?

It's hard to comment because it's sentimental to you but it's not a good name for a baby OP. Middle name would be fine though.

Sorry for your loss Thanks

What about for a middle name? I’m not keen for a first name sorry.

CandyYumYum · 05/02/2018 17:46

Perfect for a middle name. Really not great as a first name.

I would laugh though if I met a chubby cheeked toddler called Ron.

KerplunkChampion · 05/02/2018 17:47

I like it and I like Ronnie, it'll come back like Alfie did. You'll be slightly ahead of your time I think.

wisterialanes · 05/02/2018 17:50

I think Ron/Ronnie is lovely for all ages. If Alfie/Albie is fine then I really don't see how Ronnie is any different. I probably wouldn't use Ronald as a first name unless it was abbreviated.

All I can think of is McDonald... Sorry OP

pickledhegg11 · 05/02/2018 18:05

I have a Ronnie, he's 6 and I get stopped so often by others, old and young, who overhear me calling him (he's a swine spirited Grin so I call after him a lot!) to be told how wonderful his name is. On the other hand I've also been told it's the most awful name they've ever heard Hmm

ScreamingValenta · 05/02/2018 18:09

I think Ronnie would be a very cute name for a little boy, and nothing at all wrong with Ron or Ronald when he's older.

loveulotslikejellytots · 05/02/2018 18:15

I'm leaning towards more of a middle name too. I just can't imagine a baby Ronald Grin it's like a baby Gavin or Keith... (sorry if anyone has actually named their child Gavin or Keith). Especially as my Grandad hated being called Ronnie, he was Ron.

I think Danielle Thingy (was on Celeb BB diring the racism row) has a baby Ronnie

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/02/2018 19:29

I understand Ronald, would be a lovely tribute to your late Grandad, but it is very dated. How about Ronson (Ronnie), as a modern alternative ?

Honkyzeke · 05/02/2018 20:00

As he like to be called Ron how about a name with Ron in it, such as Cameron or Aaron as a subtle tribute to him then maybe Ronald as a middle name.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 05/02/2018 20:17

I've met a few baby Ronnies at playgroups recently, not sure if they are short for Ronald or just Ronnie though. Ron is nice, didn't do Ron Weasley any harm!

harrietm87 · 05/02/2018 20:51

I think Ronnie is definitely on the rise - along with Reggie, Stanley, Sid etc. You could call him Ronald nn Ron if you didn't like Ronnie - I think it's cute! Otherwise middle name would def work.

RavenWings · 05/02/2018 21:20

I hear Ronald, I immediately think McDonald...I think it would be completely fine as a middle name (plus I love when middle names are used as tributes to people), but I just couldn't do it as a first.
