Depends where you live I'd say, makes me think of d'coat on sorry.

jellyandsoup · 04/02/2018 19:53

Honestly... it sounds like a dogs name

Ohyesiam · 04/02/2018 20:25

I'm not out there at all, and i really like it.

To me it sounds outdoorsy and adventurous and full of energy and appetite for life. The sound of it rolls nicely off the tongue.

I'm vaguely aware that a couple of famous Americans (?) Are called it , but I'm not aware of the class thing that posters up thread refer to. My oh teaches in a massive comp, and he says it's not one of " those " names. The ones where teachers have heart sink when they see it on the register.

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 20:27

I love it! Only thing that would put me off is 50 shades of grey

Topseyt · 04/02/2018 20:30

I wouldn't. Not keen.

Slippery · 04/02/2018 20:35

Awful. Sounds like a stripper's name.

I met siblings once, named Montana and Dakota.

I think it’s alright. Imagine it in your local accent though. It would sound a bit shit in the accents where I live.

Kpo58 · 04/02/2018 21:04

Fine if you are American...

midsomermurderess · 04/02/2018 21:09

I am watching Dakota Blue Richards In Endeavour right now Smile. I rather like I (better than her character’s name, Shirley).

That1950sMum · 04/02/2018 21:10

No. Just no.

RavenWings · 04/02/2018 21:13

I agree with the stripper comment.

TatianaLarina · 04/02/2018 21:13

What’s with the pretentious wannabe American names?

If you were from that area of the US it would be fine.

NewYearNiki · 04/02/2018 21:30

It isn't a name.

I took this from a Native American language website.

DAKOTA: Baby name books claim that this is a Sioux name meaning "friend," but it is not. It is the name of a Sioux tribe, and no one within the tribe is called "Dakota" for their first name, as this is not culturally appropriate. It also does not mean "friend." It is a plural noun meaning "the allies." Naming your child this would be like naming him or her "Frenchmen."

Cultural appropriation is bad enough but doing it inappropriately and incorrectly is even worse.

wilts09 · 04/02/2018 21:52

Not for me x

Zaya71 · 06/02/2018 23:58

I quite like it, but there are a few dogs near me named Dakota. I know one human Dakota (who happens to be American) nn Koty (pronounced Kody with the way Americans pronounce their Ts)
