I'd just get the Mike Oldfield song, 'In Dulci Jubilo' in my head anytime I saw the name. Especially good luck avoiding it at Christmas!

Dulcie and Lucie? A bit similar for me.

AnneOfCleavage · 03/02/2018 10:49

I read a children's book with a character named this who was horrid and was therefore called Dulcie Repulcie (as in repulsive) by her school chums. Can't get around that I'm afraid.
Also knew a sweet elderly lady called that so associate it as quite an old name.
Never seen Dolcie as the correct spelling - thought that was a shoe shop years ago Grin

Namechangeuser · 03/02/2018 10:56

I can't get past the dull in dulcie like other pp's.

FirstTimeMom12 · 03/02/2018 11:25

Oh wow guess it will be India then, or will keep looking as I like cute names like Phoebe (too common for us though) that can grow well on a child too and don’t know why but Whereas I like India, not loving Indie
Reading all these on Dulcie, not feeling brave enough to use it

Meant that can sound nice on an adult rather than grow well on a child...

Anything is better than India. Would you call a child Bangladesh or Burma? Nevertheless, I'm not sure about Dulcie, not as a name in itself, and I think Dulcinea is a bit of a mouthful, not helped by the fact that I didn't know how to pronounce it. I would have said Dull-si-NEE-uh, which is wrong. Dulcia/Dulcea/Dulcina might be better (all valid forms of the name).

ManyFloralBlouses · 03/02/2018 11:40

I don’t like India either sorry op

Jammycustard · 03/02/2018 12:10

I said India initially, but I don’t love that either. Lucia is a very pretty name and India makes me think of Katie Hopkins (her daughter) or a faux hippy posh person.

Littlechocola · 03/02/2018 12:16

I love Dulcie/Dolcie. I wanted to use it for dd but Xh said it was a male name where we live?
Not so keen on India. Very over used by people hoping to be ‘quirky’.

Littlechocola · 03/02/2018 12:17

If you have a Lucia, how about Rosa, Rosita or Rosalie?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/02/2018 12:30

Bangladesh or Burma aren't anything like the same as India, which imo is pretty sounding.

CrystalMethHog · 03/02/2018 12:31

My Nana was dulcie, I love it

daisypond · 03/02/2018 12:43

*GreatDuck" In what way are Bangladesh and Burma not the same as India? All countries, far away, millions of poor people, one even ends in the letter A, like India - therefore it must be suitable for a western girl, surely(?). India has connotations of the British Raj and colonialism, which would make it worse, actually, to use it as a name, in my opinion. But it's popular on here, so I'm in a minority.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/02/2018 12:49

I doubt anyone calls their DD India because of any affiliation with the country but because it sounds nice! Bangladesh doesn't have the same ring to it somehow 🤔

Chasabeth · 03/02/2018 13:20

I love the name Dulcie, but one of mates is called Dulcie & she is a lovely person so that’s my association with it. Her name full name is Dulcia Smile

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2018 13:31

I hate it. Sorry OP.

I don't like India either but it's much better than Dulcie.

daisypond · 03/02/2018 13:40

GreatDuck Cambodia sounds nice too. We don't see many girls called that. But India was "improved"/exploited by the British for a couple of centuries and is still exploited for its "exoticism" by westerners using its name for their daughters. I just don't get why anyone would do it.
I've come around to Dulcie. I've been thinking about it.

Cowandchickentake2 · 03/02/2018 13:42

Hate it.

RavenWings · 03/02/2018 13:57

Dulcinea is really awful. Dulcie...I see it a lot on here. Like Maud and Agnes I just don't see the appeal.

I can't get worked up about India, plenty of people call their daughters Erin after all (which I would personally never use as it's an American name to me).

FirstTimeMom12 · 04/02/2018 08:17

Daisypond that was the thing that made me hesitate on India, but that being said I agree with GreatDuck people use India nowadays because it sounds beautiful not to show their support on colonialism
Also I come from an English colony myself and if someone here named their daughter after my home country I will feel honorored though I don’t like the sound...
So on that basis I like India and it is actually growing on us
I also see it as a nature name as the word comes from Indus River which I like and etymologically it is traced back to a word meaning Ocean

Good for you OP. India is a beautiful name.

FirstTimeMom12 · 04/02/2018 13:55

Thank you GreatDuck I agree 😊
